Texas Joining Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact
Texas Parks and Wildlife Share
Game law violators in Texas could face additional consequences for their actions under an interstate agreement recognizing suspension of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses in other states.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved a regulation for Texas to join 31 other states currently participating in the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact.
The Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact is an agreement that unresolved hunting and
fishing violations in one state can affect a person’s hunting or fishing privileges in other participating states. Any person whose license privileges or rights are suspended in a member state could also be denied future purchase of a license in Texas until they have satisfied suspension in the other state. If a person's hunting, fishing, or trapping rights are suspended in Texas, they may also be suspended in member states as well. MORE

According to the most recent Firearms and
Ammunition Excise Tax Collection Report, released by the Department of the Treasury, firearm and ammunition manufacturers report excise tax obligations to be more than $122 million in the second calendar quarter of 2009, up 52 percent over the same time period reported in 2008.
This dramatic increase follows a 43 percent increase in excise tax obligations from the previous quarter and 12 straight months of significant increases in FBI background checks -- another strong indicator of firearm
sales.

TPWD Begins Annual Hunting and Fishing Regulatory Process
Texas Parks and Wildlife

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department staff briefed the
Regulations Committee of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Nov. 4 on possible changes designed to increase recreational opportunity and further enhance the state’s fish and wildlife resources.
Unlike last year's regulatory cycle, where wildlife officials made sweeping changes to white-tailed deer seasons and bag limits, the current slate of potential changes is fairly slim. Additional proposals could arise in the next couple of months and a complete suite of staff recommendations will
be presented during the Jan. 27, 2010 Commission Regulations Committee meeting.
According to TPWD big game program director Clayton Wolf, following last year’s extensive changes hunters shouldn’t anticipate substantive alterations to deer season for at least a couple of years.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Choosing and Using Blinds and Stands
Big Game Hunt
Share

Blinds and tree stands are all the rage with
today's hunter. Used for almost all big game species, ground blinds and tree stands, not to mention freestanding hides are huge on the deer hunting scene. All sorts of blinds allow us to essentially vanish inside a tent or box-like structure. Stands allow us to hunt at an elevation less easily recognized by game.
Ground blinds are becoming very popular. Likewise, more of the hunting population is taking to the trees than ever before.
Regardless of whether you use a gun or a bow, as a ground
blind or stand hunter you quickly learn to consider seasonal timing and the lay of the land, along with several other factors.

Hunters Helping the Hungry
Kerrville Daily Times

The Hill Country came alive with the sound of gunfire as hunters head to the woods on opening
weekend in search of a trophy buck or just some venison for the freezer.
However, if hunters find their freezers still stocked from last season, there are several programs throughout the Hill Country that accept donated deer and give them to local service organizations to help feed the needy. One deer can feed as many as 200 people.
Those programs, including Hunters for the Hungry and Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, are especially important this year, when the need at local food banks
is higher than ever and donations are down.

Conservation Force Contesting Trophy Seizures and Forfeitures

Conservation Force is contesting trophy seizures and forfeitures in Federal District Courts from San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York. The first claims filed were over four different leopard seizures in San Francisco that have evolved into three different federal court cases.
The government has taken the legal position in San
Francisco that any irregularity, including clerical errors, on permits or loss by third parties such as airlines renders that trophy contraband, which is illegal to possess or release.

Are Quail On The Rebound?
Petersen's Hunting
Share

They read like a series of obituaries, but the surveys and harvest reports are nothing more than a running commentary on the status of bobwhite quail. The decline started in the 1960s, said Roger Wells,
national habitat coordinator for Quail Unlimited, and biologists and hunters took notice. However, it wasn't until the late 1970s and early 80s that wildlife managers started pouring resources into examining the root causes and potential solutions for reversing the downward spiral.
