Surefire Duck Spreads Petersen's Hunting Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does such the perfect decoy spread exist? Sadly, it does not. While there is no single universally productive duck spread, there are a handful of rigs which have proven themselves over the years and across the country, regardless of the situation, weather variables or location. One of these spreads, combined with in-depth scouting, emphasized concealment, and competent calling -- or no calling at all, if the case warrants such -- should result in birds on the strap. More
Holder Dials Back his Commitment to Pushing Ban on Assault Weapons The Hill Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Attorney General Eric Holder is retreating on his commitment to pursue a controversial gun-control measure. Holder's statements, recently delivered to senators in writing, clearly indicate the Obama administration is in no rush to reinstate the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. In response to written questions from Senate Judiciary Committee members, Holder adopted a much different tone on the ban than he did in February, when he said, "As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons." If you or someone you know uses a tree stand when hunting, before you head into the woods, make sure your tree stand has not been recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Gander Mountain announced a voluntary recall of about 13,000 hang-on fixed position tree stands. The former head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently called for the U.S. to reinstitute the ban on assault weapons and take other measures to rein in the war between Mexico and its drug cartels, saying the violence has the potential to bring down legitimate rule in that country. Former CBP Commissioner Robert C. Bonner also called for the United States to more aggressively investigate U.S. gun sellers and tighten security along its side of the border, describing the situation as "critical" to the safety of people in both countries, whether they live near the border or not. When Hunting Bucks, it's Age Before Beauty The Dallas Morning News Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Why is it important that a hunter be able to age a live deer at maximum rifle range? Because most bucks don't reach their full antler-growth potential until they are at least 5 years old. Depending on range conditions or whether the deer receive supplemental feed, their antlers may peak at age 6, 7 or even older. It seems a shame to shoot an outstanding young buck before he has a chance to reach his potential and, likewise, before he has a chance to spread his superior genes through the deer herd. It seems equally shameful to take a young, outstanding buck and leave an older, unimpressive buck to do the breeding. That is why so much emphasis is placed on being able to determine a live buck's age. More

Practically every deer hunter walking into Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium recently has wanted to see the picture. So far, no one has been disappointed, said Tony Korth, aquarium director at Schramm Park near Gretna. "Everybody's saying 'state record' right now," Korth said. "It's hard to say." The 38-point whitetail generating the buzz was shot by a 24-year-old Texan hunting on private land in Richardson County, Neb. On Wednesday, Wes O'Brien told the Journal Star his trophy has received a preliminary score of 281. More
