Hunters Have a Voice, If They Know How to Use It
from the Killeen Daily Herald
It's usually pretty easy to find a hunter who believes that some form of change is needed to our current deer hunting regulations in Texas. Opinions often vary widely as to exactly what those changes should be. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission is the governing body that determines what, if any, changes are to be made to those rules and regulations. Their goal is to always balance hunting opportunities with the sustainment of a healthy statewide deer population. More

Waterfowl Hunters a Separate Breed of Sportsman
from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Waterfowl hunters are birds of a different feather. Rising long before the sun hints at making a rosy appearance to slog around in muck fit for a water buffalo while hauling around a gaggle of decoys in often less than stellar conditions may seem bird-brained to the average human. But for the average waterfowler, there's no place they'd rather be than right in the thick of it, patiently scanning for bright plumage and cautiously listening for whistling wings this time of year. Hunter's Backpack Brings Versatility, Enjoyment and Safety to a Day in the Woods
from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You could throw everything you might need into the vehicle and head for the woods. But every time you walk back to the truck to retrieve a raincoat, or to shed a parka in the heat, a nice buck might amble past your stand. The answer, according to hard-hunting experts, is to use a good backpack, designed with a hunter's needs in mind. More

Noise Adds Fun to Deer Hunting
from the Dallas Morning News
The rocky draw where I perched is a travel corridor for whitetails, so I began clashing my rattling horns together to simulate a buck fight. It wasn't long before a mature buck crossed a small opening in a clump of live oaks north of my position. By the time I'd gotten my binoculars on the spot, the buck was just walking out of sight, but I could tell by his body language that he heard the fight and was coming to investigate. More

Deer Season Off to Good Start
from the Abilene Reporter-News
Big Country hunters and area game processors all agree that the opening weeks of this season have been fair to good, despite some too hot weather. The afternoon temperatures rose into the 70s and 80s on several days, too hot for many hunters to kill a wild deer, but a lot of hunters have pulled the trigger then quickly transported their game to the cooler rooms at their favorite butcher shop. Most processors I've talked to say opening weekend this year was comparable to last year's hunt. More

Hunting in Open Desert Range Has Its Own Rewards
from the San Antonio Express-News
It was a morning made for deer hunting, and it was a struggle to get up and out of camp. That struggle seldom crops up in November. Few hunters in our camp make the trip west before Thanksgiving. But I am here this weekend because of a buck we have seen two times this year. This year its rack carries 10 points and is 20 inches wide. That's not a monster deer in many parts of Texas, but on open desert range it is a remarkable animal that is worth hunting, if not killing. More

Last-minute Blind Helps Brownsboro Man Lead Buck Contest
from the Tyler Morning Telegraph
Brownsboro's Wade McIntyre wasn't set up completely to hunt last weekend. It didn't matter as he took the lead in the North Texas Adult Division of the 29th Tyler Paper Big Buck Contest. Only in his second year on the Hall County lease, McIntyre set up a new blind Friday, but didn't get to clear any shooting lanes around it until mid-day Saturday. About 4 p.m. he climbed in the new stand and an hour later he had an 8-pointer scoring 140-2/8. More

Wisconsin DNR Recommends 7,000 Bear Hunting Permits for 2009
from the Winona Daily News
Wisconsin wildlife experts recommend nearly 7,000 permits be issued next year to hunt black bears. The Department of Natural Resources says that would be about 2,300 more than this year and in line with a new study that estimates 26,000 bears roam the state. That’s at least twice as many as previously thought. More

Editorial: Hunters Pay for Wildlife Conservation
from the Lexington Herald-Leader
In a recent commentary, the Humane Society of the United States attempted to condemn substantive wildlife scientific studies and data with no more than an emotional plea. Pam Rogers, Kentucky state director for HSUS, cherry-picked numbers and reassembled them to fit the HSUS's anti-hunter/animal rights agenda. She misled readers into thinking there may "be as few as 89 bears in the entire state." That's not even close to being an accurate statement. More

Hip Shot Drops Crouching Lion
from the Daily Inter Lake
With a hip shot to the head, an elk hunter killed a mountain lion that was stalking him on Crane Mountain. "I turned around and a little less than 10 behind me was a mountain lion, belly to the ground, crawling right toward me," Matt Smith said. "It was a pretty instantaneous response, it being that close and being in the attack position it was in." Smith fired once from the hip with his 7 mm magnum rifle, the bullet striking the mountain lion in the head and killing it. More
