Lone Star Outdoor News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
International conservationist, naturalist and hunting rights advocate Hubert Thummler of Mexico City has been selected by Dallas Safari Club to receive the 2010 Peter Hathaway Capstick Hunting Heritage Award. "Hubert Thummler once said, 'Hunting and conservation are not only compatible but also inseparable,' and he has used this heartfelt philosophy to influence wildlife policy and sporting traditions on a global scale," said Ben Carter, DSC executive director. "His sustained commitment and significant contributions not only benefit today’s sportsman and women, but those of future generations as well." More

Zimbabwe Hunting Season Remains Open
AfricaHunting.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Information has been received from official sources which disputes the rumor that Zimbabwe had closed hunting for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The Zimbabwean government has said that hunting for the remainder of the 2009 and for 2010 will continue while Zimbabwe engages in enhanced measures to curb poaching. Zimbabwe's government, responding to allegations that some 2009 hunting permits were being forged, is now taking extra precautions to confirm that all government issued hunting permits are in fact legitimate. Moving forward into next year, the government will create new government permits that have better forgery security. More

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has issued a ruling authorizing licensed manufacturers who perform a manufacturing process on firearms for another licensed manufacturer not to place their serial numbers and other required identification markings on the firearm, provided the firearm is already properly marked with a serial number and all other requirements of the ruling are met. The Last Great Land
the Denton Record-Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wildlife scientists at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute in Kingsville call South Texas the last great place for American wildlife. The region, roughly described as everything from San Antonio south to the Gulf of Mexico and west to the Rio Grande, incorporates 20 million acres. More than 15 million of those acres qualify as wildlife habitat. Most is within the boundaries of large, protective ranches that range from 2,000 acres to the most famous of all Texas ranches, the King Ranch, which sprawls across 825,000 acres -- an area larger than Rhode Island. Muzzleloaders: The Not So Smokey Smokepole
Petersen's Hunting    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Savage 10ML II is a refinement of a previous rifle. The new gun is, like many other Savage rifles these days, state of the art and well made. Instead of pouring a healthy dose of Triple Seven down the spout, this rifle uses smokeless powder -- the same kind of propellant you will find in self-contained metallic cartridges. But what is so great about using smokeless powders in a muzzleloading rifle? More

Cache Money
ESPN Outdoors    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 1970, the Cache River, which provides a large portion of winter habitat for mallards that migrate down the Mississippi Flyway, was slated for a landmark project that would have straightened the river and destroyed the way duck hunting is enjoyed in Arkansas today. More importantly, it would have drained critical wintering habitat that mallards need to complete their migration. The river bends are rest stops, but the woods around them full of a mixture of pin oaks and native grasses provide sustenance for their trek. Invertebrates are abundant and necessary for hens to be able to be build strong eggs to sustain a hatch once they return to the Prairie Pothole Region. It's a perfect relationship between wetlands thousands of miles apart, one that almost lost half its equation. More

Who Needs a 12-Gauge?
Petersen's Hunting    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The author of the linked article does not buy in to needing a 12 gauge shotgun for many applications. For most upland wingshooting, he says, you don't need to throw a handful of shot into the air with each tug on the trigger. He continues that for birds up to the size of grouse, 7/8-ounce of shot is plenty and anyone who cannot get the job done with an ounce of shot has himself, and not the shotshell he is shooting, to blame -- and the only time that use a heavier shot charge is necessary in the 20 is when hunting pheasant. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) submitted its court brief on December 2nd, arguing against a federal lawsuit seeking to turn back the decision to remove gray wolves in most of the northern Rocky Mountains from the federal list of endangered species. "FWP is continuing its efforts on behalf of Montana to convince the court that the wolf is recovered and state management is the best solution," said Joe Maurier, director FWP in Helena.
