Hunter Conquers Challenge of Safari from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Growing up chasing rabbits and pheasants in places such as Latrobe and Murrysville turned Gene Ciafre into a hunter. His first safari to Africa almost turned him into a corpse. He was helping to trail a cape buffalo that someone had first wounded when the animal -- which weighed well in excess of 1,000 pounds -- charged him from ambush. It was coming head on and had closed to 10 yards before Ciafre was able to kill it. That rush, which almost ended his life, definitely changed it. More
How to Track Down a Trophy from American Hunter New snow is a huge boon if you know how to take advantage of it. Not only does it cover old tracks and show you where the game is now concentrated (so you’ll know where to focus your time), it obviously makes finding fresh tracks and following them much easier. Game also tends to feed, and hence be on the move, more when snow starts falling, and it only takes a little snow to make conditions prime. More
Breaking Down Duck Season so Far from the Houston Chronicle Most Texas waterfowlers expected this duck season to be unusual. How could it not be, with Hurricane Ike’s impacts on coastal wetlands so large and far-reaching? The first session of this year’s two-part duck season in most of the state pretty much lived up to those expectations. As waterfowlers look forward to the Dec. 13 re-opening of duck season in the state’s South and North duck zones, here are some notes on the first session and news related to the second. More

Shooting Resort Brings Quail Back To East Texas Hunters from the Tyler Morning Telegraph A successful businessman, Billy Burnett decided two years ago to take the best of what he experienced at other preserves and incorporate them onto the 550 acres he purchased eight years ago just north of Lake Fork. After a year of experimentation with field crops and rearing birds in on-sight flight pens, Burnett and his family opened the Hidden Lakes Hunting Resort. A work in progress, Burnett has sculpted the property into five fields for upland bird hunting - quail, pheasant and chukar - as well as a site for occasional European-style pheasant tower hunts. Feral Pigs have Gone Hog-wild from the Press Democrat Autumn is a time for country walks, and, if you are that way inclined, for a spot of bang-bang. But hunters and hikers alike are liable to come face-to-face with a nasty surprise: a growing number of feral hogs, the destructive descendants of domesticated animals, are stalking the United States. There are thought to be between 4 million and 5 million feral hogs at large in America, spread across 38 states. The biggest population is in Texas. More
Big Buck, Fawns Small in Numbers from the Abilene Reporter-News Deer hunting across Big Country counties this year is just about like we've all been discussing and debating, according to local game wardens, meat processors and hunters. Yes, there seem to be plenty of mature does and bucks that are in beautiful physical condition. There is however, a seeming shortage of really big-horned buck deer, and there is word from folks who checked their game herds by airplane and helicopter, a smallish fawn crop this season. More

It's Early, but Quail Numbers Strong in Some Areas from the Austin American-Statesman The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has predicted a spotty to good quail season in much of South Texas this year, depending on where rain fell and how successful late hatches have been. Quail went from extreme drought conditions in July to as much as 50 inches of rain in some areas by October, and that spurred adult quail into laying and hatching eggs. More
For Hunters, Chasing Bears a Way of Life from The Fayetteville Observer It’s 4 a.m. on Nov. 17. Before Tim Rowe climbs into his truck and drives two hours east to the woods near the North Carolina coast, something needs to be made clear: Rowe loves his dogs. He takes care of them.
