Study: Limited lion hunting better than outright ban
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Limiting lion trophy hunting in Africa, rather than an outright ban, would better benefit the species, report conservation scientists. "Although little reliable data exist, it is suspected that the (African) continental lion population has declined by at least 30 percent in recent decades, while the species' geographic range has shrunk by as much as 82 percent," begins the PLoS One journal report led by Peter Andrew Lindsey, now with Panthera, a New York-based conservation organization, citing reports finding perhaps 20,000 wild lions remaining. Connecticut wildlife officials consider 1st bear hunt since 1840
The Hartford Courant    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If Connecticut opened a bear season, it would be the first time the animals have been hunted in the state since 1840, said Paul Rego, a wildlife biologist with 25 years' experience at the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's wildlife division. During much of the past 170 years, black bears were nowhere in the state. They were hunted completely by 1840 and their woodland habitat was depleted to make way for farms, Rego said. Bears lumbered back into Connecticut from northern states in the 1980s. They've thrived and spread out, sometimes snooping around trash cans, frightening — and in a few cases, killing — livestock or rummaging around compost piles, beekeepers' hives and backyard bird feeders. Reported bear sightings were 37 times more common last year than in 1995. More

Special rule for scimitar-horned oryx, addax and dama gazelle repealed
ADWA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a final rule to eliminate its special regulation authorizing the breeding, management and free trade of three endangered African antelope species — the scimitar-horned oryx, addax and dama gazelle. Although these animals are classified as endangered species, the special regulation enacted by USFWS in September 2005 made it possible for owners of captive herds to engage in activities including the purchase and sales of the animals and to breed these animals on ranches across the United States. Now is the time to hunt feral hogs with population on rise
San Marcos Daily Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Feral hogs have exploded in exponential numbers in recent years, especially across the southern United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that about 5 million wild hogs roam the United States. The very same agency estimated hog population of a million in 1998. Texas is a hog heaven. Probably 2 million of the beasts roam the state. It's no wonder that they can populate an area so quickly. One sow can give birth to up to three liters of 6-8 piglets per year. More

According to a statement issued in Dar es Salaam, Tanzinia, by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, an official list of 60 successful tourist hunting companies was made public in September last year, out of the number, 51 firms are owned by the indigenous operators and the remaining nine firms under foreign companies. Nearly 60,000 firearms industry professionals will make their way to the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show, Jan. 17-20, to get a first look at the new products and services they hope will excite customers in 2012. The $4.1 billion industry continues to be a bright spot in the anemic U.S. economy, as sales in 2011 topped the previous year's. Through December, adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check statistics, an indicator of industry sales, showed 19 straight monthly increases over the same period of the previous year, and background checks for Black Friday, Nov. 25, set a new one-day high. Winter population of snow geese hits record low on Texas coast
Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For millennia, patches of Texas' coastal prairies and marshes have each winter turned white as a blizzard of as many as a million snow geese tumbled from the sky at the end of their annual southern migration from summer homes in Arctic regions. But during the past decade, the Texas coast, which along with Louisiana's coastal area traditionally wintered the entire mid-continent population of snow geese, has seen a steady decline in the number of these signature waterfowl spending the cold-weather months on our coastal plain, even as the continental population of the birds has reached record highs. Time for Texas to take a step back from quail hunting
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The reality of the situation is this: If you're going to shoot a quail this year, you're probably going to have to do it at some kind of shooting resort. If you don't want to do that, put the guns in the safe and the dogs on Craigslist and move on. Quail are done. Blame the weather, land fragmentation, coastal bermuda, aflatoxin in deer corn, drought, fire ants or pesticides. It doesn't really matter, because quail, bless their little hearts, are hurting, down so low they may never get up. More

South Africa deploying more rangers against rhino poachers but no ban on hunting
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
South Africa is hiring 150 more rangers to try to stop rhinoceros poaching in its flagship Kruger National Park. Environment Minister Edna Molewa made the announcement. There are already 500 rangers on duty at Kruger. Recently rangers found 11 dead rhino in the park, the first poaching deaths of 2012. Last year, a record 448 rhinos were poached in South Africa, more than half in Kruger National Park. More
