FERC looks to address new cyber threats in updated reliability standards
FERC has proposed a series of modifications to its critical infrastructure protection reliability standards, designed to address growing concerns that the nation's bulk generation and transmission systems remain vulnerable to cyberattacks. The commission wants the utility industry to develop new security protocols, including standards for data flowing across unsecured third-party networks.
Outrage over EPA emissions regulations fades as states find fixes
The Washington Post
Even after years of talk about a "war on coal," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell startled some of his constituents in March when he urged open rebellion against a White House proposal for cutting pollution from coal-fired power plants. The call for direct defiance was unusual even for McConnell, who has made a career of battling federal restrictions on coal. Yet more striking is what has happened since: Kentucky’s government and electric utilities have quietly positioned themselves to comply with the rule — something state officials expect to do with relatively little effort.
4 things to look for in EPA's new voluntary methane reduction proposal
The Energy Collective
The Environmental Protection Agency is soon expected to propose its new "enhanced" Natural Gas STAR program, providing guidelines for oil and gas companies that want to voluntarily work to reduce their methane emissions. Calls for voluntary measures by industry to address this pollution have increased in recent months, as the EPA is set to release its first-ever methane rules this summer.
The Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015
US Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources
On July 22, 2015, Chairman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA) unveiled the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s broad, bipartisan energy bill. Focused on a wide range of national energy opportunities and challenges, the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015 shows what is possible when Senators work together and strive to reach agreement.
