A recent study released by the Center for Studying Health System Change, or HSC, reveals a gap between what the federal government hopes health information technology, or health IT, can achieve in terms of patient care coordination and how well the technology actually assists physicians in practice. "Are Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) Helpful for Care Coordination? Experiences of Physician Practices," which was published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that "there is a gap between policymakers' expectation of current EMRs' role in the coordination of care and clinicians' real-world experience with (these systems)." A medical evacuation helicopter was on its way. For Dos Santos, it was an eerily familiar scene. During an eight-month tour in Iraq two years ago, the Navy corpsman served in a shock trauma platoon, treating wounded Marines near the front lines. More

Congress took another step toward avoiding a 21.2 percent cut in Medicare physician payment slated for March 1 when the House passed legislation on Feb. 4 to authorize an increase in the government's debt limit and to implement statutory "pay-as-you-go" provisions. The vote cleared the way for President Obama's signature and will ensure the federal government has the capital necessary to avoid defaulting on its financial obligations. More

In the wake of state budget cuts approved last summer, Los Angeles County will likely slash rates paid to private physicians who care for poor residents without health insurance. Doctors who do not practice in the county's network of public hospitals and clinics now receive 27 percent of the cost to provide basic medical services per patient. If approved by the Board of Supervisors, the rate would be reduced to 18 percent. More
