Sen. Max Baucus's (D-Mont.) health care reform bill took a giant step forward Wednesday as congressional scorekeepers concluded that it would extend coverage to millions of Americans while also cutting the deficit. The highly anticipated Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis provides a much-needed boost to Democratic efforts to overhaul the healthcare system. It comes as House leaders are struggling to craft a bill that can attract 218 votes and bolsters Baucus’s case that his measure has the best chance to pass both chambers of Congress.

Most ERs Don't Meet Recommended Wait Times, Study Says
from Modern Healthcare A study published in the American College of Emergency Physicians' journal found that most patients wait longer than triage standards would dictate when they go to receive treatment at hospital emergency departments. The study, US Emergency Department Performance on Wait Time and Length of Visit, found that only one-quarter of all patients who need admission for inpatient hospital treatment are actually admitted within four hours of arriving at the emergency room.
