Jails brace for influx of mentally ill

In downtown Houston, the man who runs the largest mental health facility in Texas was pondering the same possibility as other mental health professionals. It's the Harris County Jail, where, on any
given day, approximately a quarter of the 10,000 or so inmates receive constitutionally required mental health services for their diagnosable psychiatric conditions. Sheriff Adrian Garcia expects the numbers to grow.

An emergency medical technician and nurse from Aurora, Ill., is awaiting trial on 14 felony charges in two counties, after allegedly stealing prescription medication while on the job in Naperville and Oswego. Kathryn J. Swaim allegedly confessed to Aurora police she stole the drugs because she suffers
from pain caused by a back injury.
