EWGA Board Member Profile
Association Board President
Margaret E. Downey, EWGA Jacksonville, Fla., Chapter
General Manager, Learning & Development Strategies
CSX Transportation

Why did you join EWGA?

I joined EWGA because I needed to learn to play golf. My boss was an avid golfer and held all of our staff meetings at his country club, and we were all required to play golf. After a couple of very bad experiences, I was determined to learn to play so I could at least participate without embarrassing myself. I joined the local chapter as a beginner and soon learned to love the game — 18 years later, I'm still an avid golfer and a committed EWGA Volunteer.

How long have you been a member?
I joined in 1995 as a charter member of the Jacksonville Chapter.

How long have you played golf?
Since 1995.

Which is your favorite course?
I love the courses at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine. The complex there is a special place that houses the World Golf Hall Fame as well as two beautiful courses — The Slammer & Squire and King & the Bear.

What prompted you to learn the game? See response to Question No. 1.

How do you utilize golf for business?

I have used golf to help develop relationships with a number of male colleagues in the railroad business. It is a very male-dominated industry, so having the common bond and love for golf has helped me spend quality time with both customers and colleagues and develop relationships that have helped me achieve business objectives.

What has been your best experience as an EWGA member so far?
I have had many amazing experiences, but both the trip to Ireland to attend the Solheim Cup and the recent event in Bermuda for the PGA Grand Slam were great trips.

How has being a member of EWGA opened doors for you personally and professionally?
My EWGA membership and volunteer experiences have led to meeting some amazing professional women and the development of some wonderful friendships all around the country. I have expanded my network and often call on these women for advice and assistance in making connections to support my business and personal goals.

As the New Year rolls in, the one constant that everyone can depend on at the Deer Creek Golf Club is for EWGA Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Chapter member Helen Gescheidt to be teeing it up each week. Helen is pictured here at a birthday tribute with fellow EWGA member Brittany Ecalono. Brittany joined the EWGA Fort Lauderdale Chapter last year and occasionally phones Helen to play 9 holes together. Just goes to show you're never too old to mentor, in golf and in life, and to be an inspiration to others. Read the full Sun Sentinel article here.
