Spieth wins 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur

Jordan Spieth, 17, of Dallas, earned a 6-and-5 victory over Chelso Barrett, 16, of Keene, N.H., to win the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur at the par-72, 7,111-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Spieth, who also won the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur, became just the second golfer in the 64-year history of the championship to claim more than one title. Tiger Woods won three consecutive Junior Amateur titles from 1991 to 1993. More

Ex-Bulldog English wins Nationwide Tour event

Former Georgia All-American Harris English won the Nationwide Tour's Children's Hospital Invitational at the Ohio State Golf Club's Scarlet Course. English, a recent graduate, became just the third amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour, joining former Georgia teammate Russell Henley (who won the Stadion Classic at UGA earlier this year) and Daniel Summerhays (who also won in Columbus as an amateur in 2007). Oakland Hills to host 2016 U.S. Amateur

Oakland Hills Country Club, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., has been selected by the United States Golf Association as the site of the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship. The dates of the championship are Aug. 15-21, 2016. The North and South Courses will be used for stroke-play qualifying and the South Course will be used for match play. More

McPherson to lead Augusta State golf

Kevin McPherson was appointed head men's golf coach at Augusta State University on July 27 during a news conference at the J. Fleming Norvell Golf House. Augusta State Director of Athletics Clint Bryant introduced McPherson, a native of Conway, S.C., to a throng of supporters at the Jaguars' golf facility. With his appointment, he became the fifth head coach in the program's history. More

Matt Lewis named Drake's head men's golf coach

Drake University has named Matt Lewis head coach of the men's golf program. Lewis, a former first-team All-Big 12 and first-team Academic All-Big 12 performer at Iowa State, has been head golf professional at Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Iowa, since 2004. As a Cyclone (1997-99) he was coached by former Drake head coach Jamie Bermel. More

Manhattan College names Jerry Wood head golf coach

Manhattan College graduate Jerry Wood has been named head coach of the Jaspers' men's golf program, according to Athletic Director Bob Byrnes. Wood, a 1975 Manhattan graduate, takes over for Walter Olsewski, who retired to focus on his duties as head coach of the men's and women's swimming teams. More

When the CPT arrived at Myrtle Beach, S.C., on July 24 for registration, it was a balmy 100 degrees. So we knew weather was going to be a challenge. Then by tee time at PineHills at Myrtlewood Golf Club the challenge wasn't heat but rain, from a tropical depression that settled in the area. We were able to get the first 18 holes in but had to suspend play for the afternoon round, due to extreme weather conditions. More

The 10th CPT summer tournament was held at the Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. Hot, sunny and breezy, the college players played the challenging course and two players, in particular, brought the course to its knees. Crystal Reeves from Broken Arrow, Okla., and Oral Roberts University shot 68, 69, 71 (-8) for a 208 total. Thomas Birdsey of Trophy Club, Texas, and Wake Forest University shot 71, 64, 72 for a 207 (-9) total. The 64 is a new Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Club record. More

DAWGS RULE – For the second time this year an amateur and Georgia Bulldog has pulled off a win on the Nationwide Tour. On Sunday, Harris English won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, to join former teammate and fellow graduating senior Russell Henley, who won the Stadion Classic at UGA's home course in Athens, Ga. in May. The first amateur to win on Tour was Daniel Summerhays of BYU when he did so in Columbus in 2007. Both English and Henley hope to be named to September's Walker Cup team and will be concentrating on amateur golf the rest of the summer. The duo was in the same group on Saturday and Sunday, marking the first time two amateurs were paired together in a Nationwide Tour event. A third former Bulldog, Erik Compton, captured the Mexico Open last month.

East extends lead to 18-12 at Wyndham Cup

Extending its lead to six points, the East Team used both the morning and afternoon matches at Wyndham Cup to take the day two lead for the first time since 2003. The East put together an impressive morning winning six points in the foursome matches. The West team held on to the very end in the afternoon, winning two out of the last three mixed four-ball matches. More

As the temperatures begin to heat up so does the competition on the TJGT. Two more events, one near Dallas and one near Houston saw some of the best junior golfers in the region battle the heat and each other on two great golf course. First up The TJGT Woodlands Junior Championship was played July 25-26 at the Woodlands Golf Resort and Conference Center on the Panther Trail course. More than 80 players from Texas and Mexico teed it up in hot and humid weather in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event. More
