The question, "Why is the U.S. realigning its geodetic references with the global framework?" should perhaps be, "Why did it take us so long?"

The Army is kicking off a wide-ranging, five-year research effort to develop new position, navigation and timing technologies for battlefield use.
The goal is to overcome technical barriers in a wide range of areas and military officials are offering to fund multiple, and even multi-phase, cost-plus-fixed-fee efforts to do that. The work may range from studies and analysis to development work that results in the production of a prototype-style deliverable or breadboard and/or a demonstration.

Open data is available from the majority of European National Mapping, Cadastral and Land Registration Authorities, a new survey has found. Research by the Open European Location Services Project reveals that 98% of respondents provide at least some of their data free of charge. Of these, 37% make all their data available under an open license.

The United States and China have negotiated compatible signal characteristics that will both protect and enhance service for users of the U.S. GPS and Chinese BeiDou constellations.
The achievement resulted from several years of discussions between U.S. and Chinese GNSS experts. The consensus to make the systems compatible and interoperable at the user level will mean better service for users of both systems worldwide.

SkyX Systems, a Canada-based long-range monitoring and UAV data providing company, has completed a flight of 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles) for the oil and gas market.
Taking place in Mexico, the SkyOne drone flew an autonomous mission over more than 100 kilometers of a gas pipeline. The flight was programmed and monitored remotely from the company's Greater Toronto Area SkyCenter mission control.

The Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations predicts the world population will increase to some 9.7 billion people by 2050. In order to support such a population, the FAO estimates that overall food production will need to increase by 50% from the production levels of 2012. The need for increased production also comes at a time when the changing climate is posing a host of new challenges.

In November, the Mount Agung volcano in Bali, Indonesia, erupted for the first time in more than half a century, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes. Hundreds of flights were canceled and up to 120,000 travelers were stranded.
Explosions from the smoking crater and tremors still rattle the surrounding region and authorities have maintained Agung's alert at the highest level. Its 1963 eruptions killed about 1,100 people.
