The biggest retailer on Earth is preparing to try its hand at being big man on campus, readying a "Walmart on Campus" store at the University of Arkansas in what appears part of a series of tests of smaller-format stores for the giant retailer. The 10,000-square-foot space under development replaces a university-run pharmacy that closed Dec. 20. Walmart on Campus is expected to open in January when classes resume at the university, though it will also be open for nonstudents. More

A test of co-branded Rite Aid drug and Save-A-Lot discount grocery stores in South Carolina has been "very encouraging," and prompted the parties to explore an expansion, officials of the drug retailer said. "The stores have done extremely well since opening and as a group are comping up over 100 percent on the front end with pharmacy running consistent with the trends before the conversion," John Standley, Rite Aid's chief executive officer, said. Services were held here for grocery industry veteran Burton Weinbaum, 77, who passed away Dec. 15. Weinbaum spent his entire 40-year career in the grocery industry, which he said was both his business and his hobby. Weinbaum began his career at Stop & Shop in 1957 and retired from Northeast Group in 1997. More

Proposed rule would cap debit interchange

The Federal Reserve Board members voted unanimously in favor of a proposed rule that would limit debit-card interchange fees. Directed by Congress in the financial reform legislation that passed this year to ensure that debit-card interchange fees are "reasonable and proportional" to the costs incurred by issuers, the Board suggested two alternatives, one of which would allow issuers a "safe harbor" interchange fee of 7 cents per transaction, based on the median actual cost, while the other would cap debit-interchange at 12 cents per transaction. More

US retail sales growth accelerated to 4.2 percent last week

Same-store sales at a selection of U.S. retailers posted last week the biggest jump of this holiday season, rising 4.2 percent as more consumers finished shopping, according to a survey of retailers. Almost 74 percent of shoppers completed gift buying in the week ended Dec. 18, spurring faster sales growth than the previous three weeks. That compared with 56.6 percent a week earlier, according to a chain-store sales index released today by New York-based International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. The 4.2 percent gain compared to a year earlier. More

Loblaw parent to pay special dividend

The parent company of supermarket chain Loblaw Cos. said it would pay shareholders a special dividend of about $7.75 (Canadian) per share, representing a $1 billion payout to its shareholders. The dividend reflects parent company George Weston Ltd.'s significant cash balances and increasing stabilization of the financial markets, officials said. The dividend is payable Jan. 18. More

Stater earnings rise in fourth quarter, comps fall

Stater Bros. Holdings said sales declined for the recently ended fourth quarter, but earnings were up as the company continued to focus on values for customers and cost controls. For the 13-week quarter, which ended Sept. 26, net income rose 19.3 percent to $5.9 million, while sales fell 5.3 percent to $897.4 million. Same-store sales fell 3.3 percent during the period. Excluding the impact of the sale of Santee Dairy, sales also dropped 3.3 percent. More

Jarden acquires Quickie

The implications of a split 4-4 Supreme Court ruling upholding a lower court's decision against the right of Costco Wholesale Corp. to buy Omega watches on the international market and sell them at a deep discount off the manufacturer's suggested retail may give retailers pause in procuring gray market goods overseas.
