Marie Antaya knew Program Development for Adult Learners (PDAL) was a good program when her first round of students reported how much value they got out of the two core courses she developed and instructed.
“Even an industry expert was able to learn from it,” says the instructor and content developer for the new PDAL certificate program offered online through Extended Education at the University of Manitoba.
“A good program can help to transform a person’s career. In our first one, students were fully engaged and learning. They made a strong connection with their classmates. A number of students emailed me to say it was so user-friendly and a better learning experience.”
In the summer of 2017, Antaya was asked to develop the PDAL program, and the first session started in January of 2018. PDAL was designed to replace the former Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education (CACE) with a more current and relevant program to be conveniently offered online.

In the past, the deskless employee was often forgotten when training budgets were allocated. But as more companies realize the value of consistent training across all distributed teams, whether in front-facing positions or not, these learners are gaining more information and access. Overwhelmingly, these workers report they want more training and feedback in order to do their jobs correctly and grow with the company. The advent of mobile training accessibility has opened a wealth of avenues for learners and businesses. On-the-go, on-demand training is a new paradigm in learning that has seen growth across almost all industries.
Learning Solutions Magazine
Educators have been using instructional comics for learning for over 60 years, but how effective are they for interactive, self-paced e-learning? I would argue that designers can and should use instructional comics for e-learning.

The benefits of coaching are clear. This development tool improves performance, employee retention, learning retention, employee engagement and behavior change. It can even help eliminate the gender leadership gap.
