Incorporating real-world experiences in e-Learning
Training Industry
Performance improvement professionals are naturally curious about how individuals learned their profession. How were they trained? Did they shadow a senior coworker, listen to lectures, take e-Learning courses or jump into role-play activities? How has their training shaped their performance? This is where the benefits of e-Learning become relevant. E-Learners can practice their skills in a safe environment without having an impact on their co-workers and customers. That being said, learning professionals who create training for those in high-risk professions have been at the forefront of developing realistic training simulations.

The characteristics of a highly effective learning environment
TeachThought
Wherever we are, we'd all like to think our classrooms are "intellectually active" places. Progressive learning (like our 21st Century Model, for example) environments. Highly effective and conducive to student-centered learning. But what does that mean? The reality is, there is no single answer because teaching and learning are awkward to consider as single events or individual "things." This is all a bunch of rhetoric until we put on our white coats and study it under a microscope, at which point abstractions like curiosity, authenticity, self-knowledge and affection will be hard to pin down.

How to get employees to care about their professional development
Fast Company
Jim sits in front of his workstation with a grin on his face as he prints off his training certificate. It's proof that he completed a compulsory four-hour online course on workplace safety; in reality, it only took Jim 18 minutes to click through the videos and pass the assessment with educated guesses. Does this sound familiar? It should. It's typical of many companies' approach to professional development, which is scary when you consider that U.S. companies spent more than $70 billion on corporate training in 2013.

The powerful effect of paying well and training vigorously
Inc.
Paying employees well and training them vigorously leads to higher profits. Recently, Steve Pearlstein, famed economist and Washington Post business writer, moderated an Aspen Institute symposium, "Business Case for Investing in Front Line Workers." In front of a crowd of 100 + Washington, D.C., thought leaders, Steve posed the tough questions to Marlin Steel — "If you pay well and train well, how is that profitable? Women in the e-Learning field: Beginning a conversation
Learning Solutions Magazine
Julie Dirksen, a contributor for Learning Solutions Magazine, writes: "I was at an industry conference a few years ago, and soon after the conference a list of the video-recorded sessions came out. Of the dozen plus recorded sessions, only one was from a female speaker. I thought, that's funny ... that's not the conference I attended. The conference I attended was full of great female speakers. How did things get so skewed at the session-recording level? I asked about the criteria, and apparently the recorded sessions were the ones that the most people indicated they were going to attend based on a pre-conference survey."
