The first myth I often need to dispel is the concept that an expert instructor is no longer needed; the second is the notion that online courses carry higher profit margins. Research shows distance education as effective as face to face education; but most of that research included distance education courses taught by an instructor. What is left when you eliminate the instructor? A lot of reading. If you plan to create sophisticated interactive learning activities, like games or simulations, plan to make a significant investment in development. Amortize curriculum development costs over 3 years." More

South Carolina leads the way in on-the-job training programs

South Carolina is at the forefront of a surge in apprenticeship programs, and its approach, born in the technical college system, has become a national model for workforce development. Since the state launched Apprenticeship Carolina in 2007, the number of registered apprenticeship programs in the state has grown by more than 300 percent, state officials said, to more than 300 programs. The number of apprentices at work in the state, meanwhile, has quadrupled to more than 3,100. More

Report finds US must finds better ways to match training to jobs

New Jersey ranks sixth nationally in percentage of adults with at least a two-year college degree, according to a report released by the Lumina Foundation, a private nonprofit working to help more Americans graduate from college and meet demands for a higher-skilled work force. A large gap exists, however, between the northern and southern counties: Cumberland County had the lowest college attainment rate in 2010 of 21 percent, while Somerset County had the highest at 61 percent. According to the report, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, the rate was 33 percent in Atlantic County and 36 percent in Cape May and Ocean counties. More
