MOOCs and lifelong learners
The Huffington Post
In many of the backlash stories I wrote about recently, a certain argument seems to be repeated that asks why schools and investors should be sinking millions into creating educational resources (i.e., MOOCs) that we all know just benefit older, educated, professional (and by implication well-off, middle-class) lifelong learners who already have so much, vs. using those same resources to advance the education of the neediest.

By investing in adult education, we can create stronger communities
The Guardian
I joined the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education during the captivating, emotional campaign that is Adult Learners' Week. The annual event has come to define our mission. It aims to showcase the life-changing stories of people progressing to employment and greater academic achievement, learning with their families and building community cohesion through continuing education.

Employers must help workers achieve career goals
Baseline
When it comes to men and women, the differences in perspective probably date back to the Paleolithic period. Today, those gender differences often show up in the workplace, as both sexes have different views about salary compensation, career advancement and other key vocational issues, according to recent survey findings from Randstad US. Managers and executives in IT organizations should take note, as industry research reveals that six out of 10 new technology jobs created this year have been filled by women.

Are you one of the best — or worst — leaders?
CNBC
I use an activity in some of my classes called the "Best/Worst Leader Traits," where small groups are asked to think of the best and worst leader they ever had and list traits of each. I'm amazed at how often the groups race to complete the list of traits of the worst leader first (and usually with more zeal)! They often tell me that these come to mind much more quickly because they have so many more examples to choose from. Indeed, those strong, widely admired leaders are typically few and far between; unfortunately, the moderate to horrendous ones are much more commonplace.

4 tips for effective on-demand training
Training Industry
Today, e-learning strategies are more popular than ever. This is particularly true for B2B and B2C organizations that are looking for more convenient, cost-effective ways to keep their staff updated and informed. e-Learning is not a "one-size-fits-all" initiative — it comes in a variety of different flavors. Some companies invest in a fully functional learning management system, while others opt for a more informal learning approach. There are also organizations that take advantage of blended learning, where they incorporate both online and in-person training sessions as part of their overall strategies. And of course, e-learning itself can be conducted both live and on demand.
