Home improvement books recalled by Oxmoor House due to faulty wiring instructions
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Oxmoor House on Friday recalled nearly 1 million home improvement books because of errors that could lead do-it-yourselfers to make risky mistakes while installing or repairing their electrical wiring. The errors in technical diagrams and wiring instructions could cause people to be shocked or create a fire hazard. More

The International Electrical Testing Association (NETA) and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) are joining forces for the first time at PowerTest 2010, bringing its combined members an unparalleled educational and networking experience. In addition to the technical seminars being offered, an entire IAEI Paper Track consisting of six separate sessions will be offered on topics ranging from field incident investigations and anti-counterfeiting measures to ground systems and third-party product certifications. PowerTest will also explore the latest NERC/FERC implications, the future of electrical inspections, and renewable energy and the power industry's role in advancing the cause. More

Specifying motors for hazardous locations
Plant Engineering    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Failure to select the proper motor for use in a hazardous location can have serious consequences -- lost production, extensive property damage, and even loss of life. Selecting the proper motor requires an understanding of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and National Electrical Code (NEC) class, group, and division designations and T code letters. In some plant engineering departments, there is only a vague understanding of the selection criteria for hazardous location motors. The specifier may pass the buck to another party in the hope that someone -- perhaps the motor manufacturer -- will fill in the missing specification data. In other cases, the same type of motor previously used in the plant is specified, with the hope that this approach will handle any situation. But this approach can greatly increase the cost of the project, while in some cases resulting in a motor that is inadequate for the application. More

A CLEVER COMBINATION
Legrand/Pass & Seymour's Tamper-Resistant Hallway Light Receptacle combines a single receptacle with an LED nightlight lasting 20 years. A photocell illuminates the light in the dark and turns it off in daylight. Meeting NEC® tamper-resistant requirements, the built-in shutter system lets plugs in but keeps other objects out. Optical fiber raceway changes with the times
Cabling Installation & Maintenance    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With constantly emerging technologies and ever-increasing bandwidth demand, today’s optical fiber network infrastructures require the flexibility to support upgrades, modifications, and additions. The concept of installing reusable optical fiber raceway systems throughout homes and buildings to support future upgrades is not new, and it has been recommended by industry experts time and again. Unfortunately, there remains a misconception among many that a two-stage installation is cost-prohibitive. As a result, many opt to install other solutions to protect fiber, such as interlocking armored cables. When it comes to providing the flexibility to upgrade fiber infrastructure, not to mention complying with the National Electrical Code requirements to remove abandoned cable, nothing performs quite like today’s optical fiber raceway systems, which ultimately provide a lower total cost of ownership than other options. India to boost support for solar power
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
India aims to install 20 million square meters of solar thermal panels and 20 million solar-powered lights as part of a plan to add 20 gigawatt of solar-based power generation capacity by 2022, the country's renewable energy minister said Monday. "We propose to provide up to 90 percent support for setting up solar power plants," Farooq Abdullah said at the launch of the National Solar Mission. More

As panels get better and cheaper, PVs are poised for their day in the sun
Greener Buildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
These days, solar power is getting nearly as much attention as wind received in recent years. In the first week of December, the EU Energy Institute was quoted extensively in British and other European media regarding that organization's belief that solar panel costs will drop dramatically and be cost-competitive with fossil-fuel-based energy for half of Europe's homes by 2020 -- notably, cost-competitive without a subsidy. This new cost competitiveness is a simple reflection of the lifetime expectancy of photovoltaics (PV). More

Designing for safety: Simple steps for reducing electrical hazards
Consulting Specifying Engineer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
All workers have a right to a safe work environment. Indeed, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of 1970 was put in place to foster worker safety as a top priority on the job. A safer environment is a more productive environment. By providing workplaces free from serious recognized hazards, workers can concentrate on the tasks at hand. More
