NFPA Journal Share ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the key areas of debate in last year's discussion of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities, centered around the topic of "wet locations." The current 2005 edition of NFPA 99 requires operating rooms and other potential wet locations in hospitals to have special protection--usually either isolated power-supply systems or ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)--against electrical shock. There are two opposing schools of thought on this, and the discussion is far from over. The proposed 2010 edition of NFPA 99 was returned to the Technical Committee at last year's Technical Session at the NFPA Conference & Expo®, and, as a result, the Technical Correlating Committee has entered the document in the Annual 2011 cycle. This means the next edition of NFPA 99 will be the 2012 edition. It also gives committee members that much more time to engage in the wet locations debate. More
Electricians plug into safety The Peterborough Examiner Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
When working with live wires on a job site, Fleming College student Kevin Kubica, 23, knows it's his responsibility to stay safe. "In this career, safety is hugely important," said the second-year electrical apprentice. "Everyday I could potentially die simply by touching the wrong thing." Kubica was one of several students who took time out of their day last week to hear from the experts at the college's first Electrical Safety Symposium. The symposium was geared at students in the electrical engineering program, fire and safety, carpentry and other trades as well as community members working in the field. More When the lightning strikes...are we going to be prepared for it? IAEI Magazine Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
As electrical designers, installers and regulators, what do we know about a need for a lightning protection system? Except for a few references, the Canadian Electrical Code is silent on this subject. With proliferation of metal flagpoles, spires, chimneys, tall construction cranes, cell towers and other communication installations on rooftops of the buildings, this question becomes more and more relevant. This article discussed the nature of lightning and the fundamental principles of lightning protection. More
The case of stray voltage in a lake EC&M Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
When six teenagers gathered at a friend's lake house to hang out for a casual evening, the group quickly decided to enjoy the cool night in an outdoor hot tub. When they'd had enough heat in the Jacuzzi, several of them decided it would be refreshing to run down to the homeowner's small dock and take a dip in the lake. Unaware of any underlying danger, the teens had no reason to believe their spontaneity would soon trigger an unthinkable tragedy.Faulty concentric neutrals on high-voltage underground cables lead to one of the teenage swimmer's drowning and two others' brain injuries. More Solar power advocates hopeful for 2010 The New York Times Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Between 500 and 600 megawatts of solar power will be built this year across the United States -- about double the figure of last year -- according to Larry Sherwood, who compiles and studies such data as a consultant to the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, a non-profit industry group. He said some analysts are projecting even higher figures. Among states, California is expected to continue its first place lead and New Jersey is likely to come in second, with Florida making a strong showing for the first time. More

The winds of change are blowing when it comes to the Illinois energy scene. Despite not being located in the so-called "wind corridor" in the United States, Illinois is among the top five states in the country when it comes to developing wind energy, said Kevin Borgia, executive director of the Chicago-based Illinois Wind Energy Association. Thirteen wind farms are already operating in Illinois, producing enough energy to power about 500,000 homes, he said. More
