The City of Vancouver has drawn fire from safety experts after letting go of its chief electrician just weeks before the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Games. Ark Tsisserev was the chief electrical inspector and electrical safety manager for the city until his dismissal last month. The city says his position was eliminated in a recent round of budget cuts, but Tsisserev's former colleagues say the decision just doesn't make sense. Right in front of you on the switchboard, a bright orange label reads: "WARNING Arc Flash Hazard, Appropriate PPE Required." As you look closer at the label, you also see: "6.5 cal/cm2 at a working distance of 18 inches." This is all part of your company's recently updated electrical safety practices. Based on the calculated incident energy in calories per centimeter squared (cal/cm2) at the equipment location, you are now required to wear flame-retardant clothing and related personal protective equipment (PPE) anytime an arc flash hazard exists. Like many people, you are probably thinking, "We never had to do this before. Besides, I am always careful. Is this really necessary?" A Utah company plans to dig a series of underground caverns that it hopes to one day fill with compressed air, releasing it to generate electricity by turning a turbine and solving one of the most vexing problems facing the clean-energy industry -- how to store power. Under a barren patch of Utah desert, a private-equity group is bankrolling the project to hollow out a series of energy-storage vaults from a massive salt deposit a mile underground. It promises to make a perfect repository for storing energy and, in effect, creating a giant subterranean battery. Energy storage is catching on as a way to make wind and solar power more useful.
