Arc Flash Blowout

Arc flash is quite different from electric shock. When a person gets an electric shock, effects arise from the passage of electric current through sensitive tissues, mostly nerves. Arc flash occurs when electric current passes through air. Once an arc starts, the gap fills with electrically conducting plasma, and grows rapidly, especially when powered by high-voltage/low-impedance sources, such as powerlines. Any circuit energized by greater than 50 V is considered to have arc-flash potential. More    E-mail article

Smart Grid: Unnecessary, or Necessary Evil?

According to a story by Kevin Bullis at the MIT Technology Review, a smarter electricity grid could fundamentally change the way people pay for and manage their electricity use. In theory, the technology could help reduce demand, save money, and improve reliability and efficiency. But implementing the necessary changes will be difficult. Determining the Power Source for a Fire Pump

Recently, the author fielded a question about the basic statement in Section 695.3 of the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC) that “electric motor-driven fire pumps shall have a reliable source of power.” The question involved the reliability of the power source for one of the most important electrical motors in a building. The NEC does not seem to provide any specific guidance on this subject, but Section 9.3.2 in the National Fire Protection Association 20, the 2007 edition of the Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection, provides information when the source of power is not reliable. Electricity Safety Switches Now Law in Western Australia Homes
from the Sunday Times
All homes sold or rented in Western Australia must be fitted with electrical safety devices, under new laws announced today.The laws come after a campaign by The Sunday Times to make it mandatory that all homes that are sold, and all rental properties, be fitted with residual current devices. The campaign was instigated after the electrocution of a 12-year-old boy in his home on Jan. 23. More    E-mail article

Connecticut Town Cuts Budget for Electrical Inspectors

Budget pressures have caused the town of New Haven, Ct., to scale back on its electrical inspection consultants. Public Works Director Lynn K. Sadosky said that the account that has been paying for electrical inspectors must be used for more pressing matters, and therefore the town will no longer be employing the consultants who have done electrical inspections.
