Farming solar energy in space
Scientific American Share
The concept of solar panels beaming down energy from space has long been pondered--and long been dismissed as too costly and impractical. But in Japan the seemingly far-fetched scheme has received renewed attention amid the current global energy crisis and
concerns about the environment. Last year researchers at the Institute for Laser Technology in Osaka produced up to 180 watts of laser power from sunlight. In February scientists in Hokkaido began ground tests of a power transmission system designed to send energy in microwave form to Earth. MORE

Brazilian wind power gets a boost
The New York Times
Share

Early this decade, a drought in Brazil that cut water to the country’s hydroelectric dams
prompted severe energy shortages. The crisis, which ravaged the country’s economy and led to electricity rationing, underscored Brazil's pressing need to diversify away from water power. One result of that introspection will climax on Dec. 14, when the Brazilian government conducts its first wind-only energy auction. The bidding is expected to lead to the construction of two gigawatts of wind production with an investment of about $6 billion over the next two years.

NECA requests extended comment period for OSHA Minimum Approach Distance rulemaking
National Electrical Contractors Association
Share

The National Electrical Contractors Association has filed a request that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration extend the time period for comments on proposed rulemaking regarding minimum approach distance. Minimum approach distance (MAD) refers to OSHA’s guidelines for the safe proximity between a worker and exposed electrical parts and the protective equipment that should be used in such proximity. OSHA’s current proposal included revised minimum approach
distances for how close a worker or an object that the worker is holding can get to an electrical part.

With an economy largely based upon a
once-booming home-construction industry, the recession has hit Deltona, Fla., particularly hard. Nearly a quarter of Deltona's men work in the construction industry, so the city has seen its unemployment rate surpass the Florida and national averages. Hoping to soften the blow, the city is chasing between $2 million and $4 million in federal stimulus grants to train people to work in the solar industry.

For most inspectors and contractors, scribbling test results into a notebook on site and later copying them neatly on to a test certificate is definitely not their idea of fun, which is why more and more of them
are using certification software. But, which software package to choose? To help answer this key question, Electrical Times reporter Keith Wilson asks some leading suppliers what their products have to offer.

Keep your cool when working with hermetic motors
EC&M

Article 440 in the NEC exists because of the difference in cooling characteristics between motors that are hermetic motors and those that aren't. Its primary goal is to keep hermetic motors within a tighter than normal temperature band by limiting excess current. This article begins with some background on hermetic motors so you can understand why they have special requirements in the NEC.
