Why you should encourage lateral growth in your team
Forbes
What exactly is lateral growth? Though the word "lateral" is usually used to denote sideways movement, we can use the term to refer to a team's ability to branch out in ways that are not limited to one particular field or direction. Instead of the traditional vertical trajectory of specialized expertise, lateral growth urges development in multiple areas of knowledge. It also acts as an equalizer: Team members are encouraged to work and grow together, instilling a collaborative mindset.

Are you making your employees' lives harder? (Hint: Maybe)
Forbes
As a leader, you've found the perfect balance of coaching your employees just enough (without hovering), delegating efficiently (without micromanaging) and making yourself available for questions (while still encouraging your team to think for themselves). Right? As any leader knows, being an inspiring and knowledgeable leader doesn't always come on the first, second or third try. It can be a long trial-and-error process.

What fire chiefs can teach us about leadership principles
By Caitlin Harrison
Firefighters face some of the most difficult and dangerous situations in any profession, so effective leadership is crucial. "No matter what you want to do with your fire department, leadership is the only thing that matters," said Dennis Compton, chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and former fire chief in Mesa, Arizona. "It's going to affect everything you try to do." At the IAFC Fire-Rescue International 2014, Compton outlined several essential leadership principles that can apply to any industry or field.

Fixing a work relationship gone sour
Harvard Business Review
Sometimes you get stuck in a rut with someone at work — a boss, a coworker, a direct report. Perhaps there's bad blood between you or you simply haven't been getting along. In fact, a negative relationship turned positive can be a very strong one.

How to choose the right leadership training program
Inc.
Leadership training programs often give participants a better understanding of why leadership is essential in a workplace environment. They may leave feeling buoyed and hopeful for the future, but when they return to their desks, they will often find they lack the tools to actually lead. Too often leadership training inspires and captivates, but it doesn't teach micro-behavioral skills that are fundamental to leadership.

Both leadership and management are the foundations of success
By Betty Boyd
Just as a building needs a foundation, so too does an organization. In this fast-paced world of business, the organization's success or failure hinges upon how both leadership and management work together. The concepts of leadership and management are not new, but too frequently are interchanged. However, each has its own meaning and methodology in regards to an organization's success. So, how can an organization use leadership as a guiding force? People make all the difference.

Put away gender stereotypes for better leadership
Fast Company
We're all familiar with the phrase "men are from Mars and women are from Venus." In the workplace, this has had unfortunate consequences for male and female leaders. Male leaders were typecast as dominant competitors who played politics inside hierarchies and were great at leading with power, while female leaders were expected to understand connection and communication and lead people and teams better. It's time to put an end to this preoccupation with gender differences.

How arrogance can ruin a fire chief's career
Fire Chief
If your actions are not aligned with the expressed goals and values of the department, it will be difficult to be an effective leader. In fact, if the leader's personal actions are too extreme and outside the departments focus, this misalignment can become a career crusher, separating the chief from the department in a hurry.
