With thousands of people gathering at universities to cheer on favorite collegiate teams, it is imperative to be prepared for the imminent and sometimes unpredictable spring storms. David Ross, CFE, retiring as Show Me Center director

David Ross, CFE, the first and only director of the Show Me Center for 25 years at Southeast Missouri State University, has announced his retirement, effective May 31. Ross was hired in January 1987 to guide the building through its grand opening and beyond. Bob Cerchio, assistant director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts at the River Campus, will serve as interim director while a national search is conducted.

China's Vice President Xi Jinping concludes US visit at Staples Center

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping concluded his visit of the United States on Feb. 17 at Staples Center, where he watched the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Phoenix Suns, 111-99. Attending his first NBA contest, the vice president was the guest of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke, and AEG China President John Cappo. Also welcoming him were California Gov. Jerry Brown, basketball legend Magic Johnson and the LA Galaxy's David Beckham.

Construction continues on expansion of Australia's Adelaide Convention Centre

Construction work has ramped up on Stage One of the $350 million expansion of the Adelaide Convention Centre in Adelaide, Australia, following the arrival of a tower crane on-site. The Hon. Patrick Conlon, minister of transport and infrastructure, and venue Chief Executive Alec Gilbert, marked the occasion by turning the first sod on the site. "This project is about returning Adelaide to the world stage, ensuring a venue of world-class standard," Conlon said.

From Brooklyn to Kansas City, Mo., and points beyond, a wide range of new buildings and freshly renovated veteran facilities are making news and offering new opportunities for touring artists. For a regional marketplace to be competitive in drawing top-shelf live content, it must have a competitive venue. By the same turn, for existing venues to remain viable in attracting talent, they must stay up to par in terms of fan amenities, production capabilities and ways to drive ancillary revenue in terms of concessions, sponsorships and premium seating. As ever, plenty of markets and venues want to stay in the game at a superior level, as evidenced by Billboard's annual sampling of new and renovated facilities across the United States.

Bozeman promoter under contract to buy historic Wilma Theatre

A Bozeman arts and music promoter may be the next owner of Missoula, Mont.'s historic Wilma Theatre. Stephen Michael, who founded SRO Live, recently finished due diligence and is under contract to purchase the iconic downtown venue. When contacted about the deal, Michael declined to comment. The Rocky Mountain Development Group listed the theater for sale at $1.8 million in late September. Rocky Mountain co-owner Rick Wishcamper said the deal with SRO could close early this summer.

A new concert complex has its sights set on Altoona, Iowa. A local company called StereoType Des Moines has been working on a project to bring more artists to central Iowa for about five years, and now it's really taking shape. A wide open field in Altoona between Adventureland, Prairie Meadows and Bass Pro Shops is the future home of an entertainment hub with six stages including a 10,000-person amphitheater, a restaurant and a nightclub.

The BOK Center's John Bolton was honored recently as the 2012 Pollstar Facility Executive of the Year at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Bolton was chosen out of all venue managers in the world by the industry organization.
