Thanks to the temporary seating configuration constructed of custom seating riser equipment from Staging Concepts, 17,000 fans will be front and center during the NCAA Final Four at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. This seating configuration involved a major dramatic move of the basketball court from the end zone, where it was in 2003 when New Orleans last hosted the Final Four, to the middle of the arena, giving tens of thousands of fans — primarily students — a chance to be near the action. University of South Florida selects Global Spectrum to manage Sun Dome

With a $35.6 million renovation of the Sun Dome Arena nearing completion in May 2012, the University of South Florida selected Global Spectrum to operate the Sun Dome Arena in Tampa, Fla., for the university. Global Spectrum, a subsidiary of the internationally recognized sports and entertainment firm Comcast-Spectacor, named Trent Merritt, an eight-year Global Spectrum employee, as the facility's new general manager. The Department of Homeland Security will offer a webinar at 2 p.m. Eastern April 4 titled "The Risk Self-Assessment Tool: What's In It for You?" The webinar will help people understand how completing a risk self-assessment can increase the security profile and resilience of a facility. The RSAT webinar will feature Federal and private sector experts including private sector facility owners and operators who already have used the tool. Presenters will explain how to use the tool and how their facilities have benefited from using it. Time to submit nominations for Lifetime Achievement Award-Convention Centers/Exhibit Halls

Nominations are being accepted for the Lifetime Achievement Award for Convention Centers and Exhibit Halls. Jan Addison, chair of the Convention Centers/Exhibit Halls Committee for IAVM, announced that the Lifetime Achievement Award Selection Committee will be receiving nominations through May 1. There have been seven previous recipients of the award: Tom Liegler, Don Jewell, Jimmie Fore, Dan Saunders, Cliff Wallace, John Christison and Dick Shaff have been honored for their outstanding contributions and service to the convention center industry. IAVM continues to oppose the Online Travel Companies on Hotel Occupancy Tax issues

For the past three years, IAVM has successfully expressed strong opposition to draft legislation in Congress and in state legislatures that would prevent state and local governments from collecting hotel room taxes from online travel companies such as Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, hotels.com, and others. IAVM joined a coalition of entities, including the United States Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, the Government Finance Officers Association and the American Hotel and Lodging Association opposing the OTCs from reducing the taxes they owe for hotel rooms. Congress passes law to protect the White House grounds and other areas

On March 8, President Barack Obama signed into law the Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011. This law amends the federal criminal code to revise the prohibition against entering restricted federal buildings (the White House) or grounds to impose criminal penalties on anyone who knowingly enters any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority. The reason for this law is that the U.S. Secret Service relied on the District of Columbia Code, which addresses only minor misdemeanor infractions, when someone attempts to or successfully trespasses upon the grounds of the White House or vice president's residence or, worse, breaches the White House or vice president's residence itself.
