The International Association of Venue Managers proudly announced the 2012 IAVM Stadiums Conference, happening live May 15, featuring an all new webSITE format. The conference will be presented in a Web-based format supported by local host sites. Industry professionals and students may choose to participate online-only or visit one of the five national host sites for in-depth discussions, networking with industry colleagues and deeper dives into the current trends and challenges of the stadiums industry.

In memoriam: Vincent J. Pantuso

Vincent J. Pantuso, one of the industry's most recognized and respected food service practitioners, passed away April 22. He was 71. Pantuso developed lifelong friendships in the industry and served as president of the National Association of Concessionaires from 1989-1991. A memorial website is being developed, but those wishing to express thoughts may do so by signing a guest book.

Donald Matthew Krueger, an IAVM Honorary Member, recently passed away. He was 79. Krueger's service to the city of Albuquerque included management of the City Warehouse, Civic Auditorium, and Convention Center, which he opened.

Update: ADA provisions for pools and spas

The House Judiciary Committee, subcommittee on the Constitution, held a hearing April 24 on the ADA Provisions for Pools and Spas. During the opening statements by the members, several members did not agree with holding the hearing without the testimony of the U.S.
Department of Justice, which did not have a representative at the hearing.

Orange County Convention Center named top facility in the country

A top online trade publication has ranked the Orange County Convention Center as the No. 1 convention center in the United States. Business Review USA made the announcement after comparing the size, capacity, locations and costs of convention centers across the country. The Orange County facility was selected as the top convention center because of the significant economic impact that the facility brings to the community, which amounts to $87.50 in estimated tax savings to each Orange County household every year.

Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre won the major venue award at this year's Meetings and Events Australia National Awards in Sydney. Operated by leading international venue management group, AEG Ogden, BCEC was named Australia's best Meeting Venue — 500 Delegates or more — from a highly competitive national field of entries in recognition of an outstanding performance in the period under review.

London 2012 Olympics: All systems go as test events put spotlight on venues

The centerpiece venue will receive its biggest and final test before the Olympic opening ceremony this week, with four days of competition in the British University and Colleges Athletics Championship on the track from Friday, and an "entertainment event" watched by 40,000 people on Saturday night. The performance, which will mark 2,012 hours until the Olympics, is crucial to the stadium being granted a safety license for its 80,000 Games-time capacity.

The Oscar venue formerly known as Kodak will now be rebranded the Dolby Theatre — and the awards show will stay there for at least 20 years, officials announced. Dolby Laboratories will take over the naming rights given up by Kodak when it declared bankruptcy earlier this year. Simultaneously, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a separate agreement to keep the annual Academy Awards ceremony at Hollywood & Highland Center venue for another two decades. Both contracts were signed with CIM Group, the commercial real estate investment company that owns the property. No financial terms were disclosed.

After a decade of debate, Hong Kong is on the road to getting its long-awaited cultural district. In January, it kicked off construction with the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre, a temporary structure housing five days of Cantonese opera, contemporary art and classic Hong Kong movies. The district's first permanent venues are slated to open in 2015, including the 1,100-seat Xiqu Centre, with facilities for Chinese opera, and the 19-hectare City Park, which will include the Free House, a small youth-oriented theater and live-music space. Tasked with setting up these venues is Louis Yu, who most recently headed the Arts Development Council, which funds many of Hong Kong's arts organizations. Yu has his work cut out for him.

Kathleen Canning will take over as general manager of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., this summer. Canning, currently deputy general manager, will step into the job held by Jessie Allen, who is expected to retire in July after 25 years as an Orange County employee. Canning joined the OCCC in 1985 and was named to her current post in 2002. The OCCC was expanded twice while Canning was in the leadership ranks and currently has 2.1 million square feet of prime exhibit space, according to the Trade Show Executive World's Top Convention Centers rankings.
