IAVM Foundation Update: Plenty going on before 2011 goes out

The Annual Giving Campaign is an investment in the venue management industry. This year member-giving is at 8 percent and equals $71,440 in proceeds. "You can still help us meet our goal," said Bill Powell, IAVM Foundation chair. "Please spread the word and encourage others to make an investment in the continued advancement of the venue industry. We've just added several new and repeat donors to our Chair's Circle."

IAVM's Venue Management School and the Graduate Institute will be June 2-7 at the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, W.Va. The VMS schools are designed to enhance the professional education of venue managers at amphitheaters, arenas, auditoriums, convention centers, exhibit halls, performing arts venues, racetracks, stadiums and university complexes. IAVM releases white paper and survey report on convention center exclusive services

IAVM has released a white paper and survey report on the business practice of exclusive services offered in Convention Centers. The IAVM Convention Center/Exhibition Hall sector committee finalized a white paper that explains the use of exclusive services and maintains the 2001 IAVM position that it must remain an option to convention centers as it accomplishes many objectives for convention center operations, including: ensuring safety of guests and staff, maintaining the quality of service, as well as providing an important revenue stream that allows convention centers to meet budget goals and expectations of stakeholders and its community. More

Cobb Galleria Centre announces renovations

The Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta announced a series of renovations and upgrades that will help to maintain the venue's status as a leader in the industry. The investment includes a complete renovation of the 25,000-square-foot John A. Williams Ballroom, common areas and restrooms. The majority of the renovations will be completed by mid-January, with the remainder to be finished by June. More

Bob O'Keeffe nabs prestigious industry award

Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre General Manager Bob O'Keeffe has been presented with a prestigious industry award in recognition of excellence and service over a 20 year career. O'Keeffe was presented with the Trevor Riddell President's Award by the Exhibition and Events Association of Australasia at an Award for Excellence dinner in Sydney, Australia. This is a discretionary award which has only been presented seven times in its 11 year history. More

Sears Holdings Corp. and the CME Group weren't the only entities benefiting from passage of Senate Bill 397 in Illinois. The bill also includes a tax credit for live theater productions that gives a boost to Broadway in Chicago, but doesn't benefit suburban theaters. Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the legislation, which allows certain theaters that produce pre-Broadway or long-run shows with labor and marketing expenses exceeding $100,000 to receive up to $2 million in live-theater tax credits beginning in July. More

St. Clair County Board of Commissioners to vote on convention center project

St. Clair County could commit to building a $9 million convention center in Port Huron, Mich. County commissioners will consider a resolution to support funding, constructing and owning the proposed Blue Water Convention Center. The county would issue bonds for the project. The bonds would be paid off in 30 years with county money, a portion of the county's hotel bed tax and money from Port Huron. More

Tulane to open $60 million football stadium on Uptown campus in 2014

Tulane University plans to open a $60 million football stadium in 2014 on its Uptown campus, about a block off South Claiborne Avenue in New Orleans, behind the baseball field, officials announced. The new facility will seat 30,000 people in what the university is calling a "Community Stadium," relocating Green Wave football back to the Uptown campus after 36 years in the Superdome and creating a new space for the university's athletics outreach programs. More

Wilmington Convention Center Earns LEED Silver

The 107,000-square-foot Wilmington, N.C., Convention Center has received LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. In Wilmington's historic river district, the facility features a white roof that reflects the sun and decreases the need for cooling, and also includes high-performance windows that help conserve energy and decrease heat from the sun during warmer months. More

Canucks Sports & Entertainment announced the appointment of Michael Doyle as executive vice president and arena general manager. Doyle will work with Victor de Bonis, chief operating officer, CS&E and alternate governor, NHL, in undertaking responsibilities including initiating, developing and executing significant new business opportunities, and in creating and championing unique service strategies that will drive an ultimate fan experience at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
