CIC Urges Government to Consider Sustainable Meeting Standards to Reduce Impact of Travel and Meetings
CIC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Convention Industry Council (CIC) responded to President Obama's call for reducing travel by government employees as a means to reduce greenhouse gases from indirect sources.

"Simply reducing travel as a way of reaching greenhouse gas targets is not a holistic solution and will not encourage real progress toward sustainable travel and meetings," stated Karen Kotowski, CEO of CIC.

"Government agencies can manage and reduce the impacts of travel and meetings by using standards such as those being promulgated by CIC -- the pending CIC/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting Standards--rather than a blanket call to reduce travel to meetings. Those standards will give government agencies the specific and measurable road map needed to accomplish the goals of Executive Order 13514 to improve sustainability and foster markets for sustainable technologies, products, and services."

CIC's draft standards are the result of 18 months of development work by its APEX Initiative, and have been developed with participation from officials from government, government meeting planners and the meetings industry at large. The standards cover a large scope of the meeting supply chain, including transportation, destinations, accommodations, meeting venue, audio visual technology, exhibitions, onsite office operations, food and beverage, and marketing communications material. Representatives from the EPA have participated in the development of each of the standards.

"As we have moved through this process, the input from EPA staff has made the standards even stronger. We look forward to their completion over the next several months and would urge government agencies to use the published standards when developing their sustainability plans. Adopting the standards once they are released will provide a substantive means to reduce the environmental impact from meetings and travel, yet still facilitate the full range of activity necessary to accomplish the business of government," Kotowski said.

The published standards are expected later this year after final approval through ASTM International's standards process. More

How to Survive a Las Vegas Trade Show
Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Las Vegas thrives on fake. The place boasts imitations of the Eiffel Tower, the Pyramids, the Statue of Liberty, a Venetian piazza, Elvises, even body parts. When it comes to trade shows, however, Vegas is the real deal. There are planes flying in from all over, hotel rooms aplenty, amenities fit for the King, and more event space than you can shake a feather boa at. More

ICEEM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) announces the release of two new industry reports. The first is a Guru Report, Space Allocation Methods for Exhibitions and Events, written by Randy Bauler, CEM, and sponsored by the Exhibition Services & Contractors Association. This new report outlines some of the more common exhibit space allocation methods employed by organizers of exhibitions and events.

The second, Managing Exhibit Results for the Not-for-Profit Government Exhibitor: Building a Better Display, is the fifth and final report in a series aimed at educating the not-for-profit government exhibitor on how to plan and build a successful exhibiting program from start to finish. This report, written by Barry Siskind, addresses key criteria that a government exhibit manager should consider when undertaking the development of a display.

Other reports in the Not-for-Profit Exhibiting series:

  • Government Exhibits – A Primer for Success
  • Managing Exhibit Results for the Not-for-Profit Government Exhibitor: Establishing and Curtailing Objectives
  • Managing Exhibit Results...: Achieving Objectives and Measuring Outcome
  • Managing Exhibit Results...: The Human Element

Both new reports are available at no cost to CEIR and IAEE members ($24 each for non-members), under the "New Reports" section on the CEIR website, www.ceir.org. More

Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
