Cities stepping up to help reduce 10 trillion gallons worth of polluted water dumped into US waterways each year

Cities of all sizes are tackling their water pollution problems, such as stormwater runoff and sewage overflow, by employing green infrastructure and design -- and they will save money as a result, according to a peer-reviewed report released by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The report provides detailed case studies analyzing how 14 cities are using these methods and encourages the EPA to advance these solutions nationwide later this year.

Average Berkeley, Calif., street in at risk condition, many worse

According to a report from the City Auditor presented to the City Council last night, the average Berkeley street is in "at risk" condition. As the report, Failing Streets, details, as street condition deteriorates, the cost of paving increases rapidly. "Berkeley streets are in a serious state of disrepair, with the average street at risk of failing," said City Auditor Ann-Marie Hogan. "Our audit shows how to use available data to decide how much to invest, when, and where, to stop the skyrocketing future cost of failed streets."

Plan ahead to enter the 2011 NCMA/ICPI Safety Awards

This important industry recognition program highlights the best of the best safety records among small, medium and large Producer and Associate members of NCMA and ICPI. Entry forms will soon be emailed out to members of the two associations, and will be available to download on both websites. Because entry requires a copy of completed OSHA 300 log (or equivalent Canadian injury report), the entry submittal timeframe is between Jan. 1 and Jan. 20, 2012. The awards will be presented during the NCMA Annual Convention & ICON EXPO in Orlando, Florida on Friday, March 2, at the headquarters hotel, Rosen Shingle Creek. The Safety Awards Program Task Group strongly urges the small producers to take advantage of this opportunity to be recognized by entering their facilities that qualify. Categories include: the Milestone Award – highly coveted, for facilities with 5, 8 or 10 consecutive years of Safety Awards entries with zero recordable injuries; Platinum Awards – the highest level of safety achievement in a single year with zero recordable injuries; Gold and Silver Awards – the best non-zero safety records, in five categories based on production hours. The first entry fee is $295, and additional facility entries are discounted at $150 each. Please note that all entries require a high resolution digital photo of the facility, production line or production team, which will be used during the awards ceremony, so please plan to take your photos in advance. Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Fla., has been selected as the headquarter hotel for the ICPI 2012 Annual Meeting. The hotel is situated on 230 acres of lush landscape and is central Florida's most luxurious meeting destination. Room Rate: $185 single/double. Staff presents to Wal-Mart engineers

On Nov. 10, 2011 six Wal-Mart engineers at their Bentonville, Ark., headquarters heard an ICPI staff presentation on PICP. This came out of contact with Wal-Mart's Director of Sustainable Facilities at the October Greenbuild show in Toronto and a 2007 meeting. Permeable pavement has attracted greater interest from Wal-Mart especially as they are building smaller stores in more urbanized sites that have no space for stormwater detention facilities. Permeable pavement is a natural solution. The group wasn’t satisfied with the performance of pervious concrete especially in cold climates. The hour and a half presentation/discussion focused on their need to use PICP with narrow joints in low-risk areas as Wal-Mart is a continual litigation target. Applications might include the garden center, employee parking, parking stalls, and marginal parking areas. Wal-Mart will design to (and not beyond) local stormwater requirements which presents selected projects with a need to use permeable pavements. The other significant discussion point was maintenance. Wal-Mart parking lots are cleaned several times a week by outside contractors which is a plus for maintaining PICP surface infiltration rates. A test area would need to be constructed to determine contractor operating requirements such that jointing stone isn't removed. All in attendance received the ICPI PICP manual and brochures and one engineer received a copy of Permeable Design Pro software. In follow up communication, ICPI has offered to participate in a test PICP area.

ICPI hails passage of 3 percent contractor withholding law

The House and Senate both passed HR674, a bill designed to repeal the 3 percent contractor tax withholding law that was slated to take effect on Jan. 1, 2013. The law would have subjected most contractors providing goods and services to nearly any government entities in the U.S. to a 3 percent withholding of contract payments.

House, Senate attempt to break impasse on Transportation Bill

In recent days, Congress has dramatically ramped up efforts to break the impasse for a comprehensive Transportation Reauthorization Bill. The new action is important to ICPI because the Transportation Bill is the best vehicle for legislation drafted by ICPI that would spur adoption of pavers in the lucrative government markets - a prime goal in ICPI's strategic plans for the industry.

U.S. manufacturing is recovering from a slump, and inflation may be peaking. Data point to an economy growing slowly but steadily. Still, surging oil prices and a possible European recession threaten to drain the economy's momentum. House GOP proposes expanded oil drilling to fund transportation spending

House Republicans proposed an expansion of domestic oil production to fund a long-term transportation spending bill, a plan that set the stage for a showdown with Senate Democrats who don't want highway funding coupled with drilling for new oil. House Speaker John A. Boehner (Ohio) said he hopes to pass a multi-year surface transportation bill by year's end that would serve as the centerpiece of a GOP jobs plan. He said expanded drilling could "provide a new revenue stream for infrastructure repair and improvement."
