Victorian decor elements are hot
Montreal Gazette
Those drawn to 19th-century style may be pleased to learn that vintage garden decor is a trend this spring and summer. Watch for replicas at decor shops or vintage items at flea markets. The look involves florals, weathered wood, wire, period typography, bird motifs and accessories, and other elements with a Victorian vibe, says Tom Mirabile, a trend watcher for Lifetime Brands.

Depth and drama emerge with bold design elements
Toronto Star
Sebastien Fauteux does more than just dismiss the idea that big, bold design elements overwhelm small spaces. Fauteux insists, in fact, that they are the key to adding drama, depth and definition to homes with tiny footprints. "People really need to put aside preconceived notions about scale, colours and style when living in a small space," says Fauteux.

How to embrace the season's colour and interiors trends so they don't go out of style
The Huffington Post
Just like the catwalks influence what we wear season after season (don't think so? Just listen to Meryl-Streep-as-Miranda-Priestly opining on the "lumpy blue sweater" Anna Hathaway's wearing in The Devil Wears Prada and you'll know what we're talking about), they also influence how we live, with designers' colour palettes and pattern choices trickling down into our interiors and home decor style.

10 ways to make a small kitchen feel bigger
Houzz
I'd be willing to bet that when you think about your dream kitchen, it doesn't include the word "tiny." Yet that's the reality that many of us live with: skimpy counter space, a cramped work triangle and precious little space for appliances. If you're not ready — or willing — to knock out a kitchen wall, you can at least do the next best thing: create the impression of a bigger space with a few strategic decorating tricks.

What's under foot for 2014?
By Christina Mogk
As much as people fuss about what color and/or treatment to apply to the walls in their homes, the reality is that your flooring choice is what will ground your space. In some ways, that grounding is what will make or break your room, pulling the rest of the elements together. Hard-surface flooring — hardwood, tile, laminate and the like — remains the go-to choice over wall-to-wall carpeting, and it does not look like a shift will be coming any time in the near future. What has changed are color preferences, sizes and manufacturing technologies.

Marimekko's Unikko pattern is 50 years old: Why does it still feel fresh?
The Globe and Mail
Designs that don't stale-date are a rarity. Nothing says 1994 like wall-to-wall beige. Floral chintz is painfully Victorian. The Unikko pattern — splotchy poppies in vibrant colours — is an exception. It was created 50 years ago by Finnish fashion and home furnishing brand Marimekko. It has the versatility and longevity of Meryl Streep — originally a textile, it is now emblazoned on everything from tea cups and couch cushions to airplanes and buses — with the freshness of Lupita Nyong'o. Despite being a half-century old, it's still potently playful and wildly youthful.

Hues for your home: Beach blues in decor
iDiva
We know the sky to be blue... I believe that it's the first remembrance of colour that we have as children. When we think of blue, it gives a sense of calmness in the mind. It's never a bold or harsh emotion. Blues in pastels make for a perfect companion in rooms for the aged; they tend to feel calm and airy, light and happy. Darker blues make a statement of honesty and confidence when used in smaller quantities. These are their psychological effects. Let's find out how we can use blues in decor according to the rooms in the house.

For white decor, go wider than shades of pale
The Wall Street Journal
The arrival of spring often gets people longing for the clean, pure color of white, and in home décor, it can make for a particularly powerful statement. "Visually, it's nice to have an airy, open, clean space that relaxes me — like a palate cleanser," says Will Meyer, principal with the New York City-based Meyer Davis Studio.

Good as gold: Copper is finally being cast in starring roles
National Post
Copper is mutable. It ages from pink to orangey-brown to blue-green — it's what gives historic buildings their verdigris roofs. Yet, for much of its history, this handsome, pliable and versatile elemental metal has not been afforded the respect it deserves; it's been treated as more of a practicality than a thing of beauty.
