OSHA listens: Stakeholders weigh in on VPP, alliance programs

John Masarick, director of codes, standards and safety for the Independent Electrical Contractors trade association, told OSHA Administrator David Michaels that valuable alliances create tools or materials and disseminate information to members. According to Masarick, IEC's alliance with OSHA "has been a useful tool in improving safety for contractors and their employees. I think the two organizations working together can reach more people than [they can] alone." More

Jobs bill passes, delivers tax cuts to small businesses

Congressman Henry Cuellar, of the 28th district of Texas, helped pass a jobs package in the House that includes $13 billion worth of tax breaks for businesses to hire unemployed workers, plus a payroll tax holiday and increased tax write-offs for the nation's small businesses. The package aims to help stabilize America's small businesses while creating tax incentives to hire new workers. More

Senators follow Obama's lead, pitch $6 billion building efficiency bill

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Energy, led by President Barack Obama, launched a "Cash for Caulkers" program called Home Star, to give rebates and other incentives to consumers who make their homes more energy efficient. Now the legislature is taking the issue even further, with two senators pitching a $6 billion rebate and tax incentive program to make apartment and commercial buildings more efficient. More
