Troubled labor looks to federal government for help on pensions

Legislation introduced recently could shift costs of union pension plans to taxpayers in an attempt to stave off organized labor's pension funding crisis. Senator Bob Casey, Pennsylvania Democrat, introduced the Create Jobs & Save Benefits Act of 2010 to address the funding problems faced by union-administered multi-employer pension plans. More

Too green, too soon? Renewable power may destabilize electrical grid

Only five years into the world's renewable energy push, many utility companies are so concerned about grid instability that they're saying they can't accept any more electricity from intermittent sources of power. Translation: Solar power only runs in the day time and can't be relied on for so called "baseload" capacity. Wind power primarily produces current at night and, likewise, can't be relied upon for baseload capacity. Geothermal, meanwhile, is perfect for providing baseload. White House starts $21 million program to aid small businesses

In March 2009, President Obama vowed to address the drought of bank lending to small companies and announced an initiative to use $15 billion from the federal bailout to unfreeze the markets that finance Small Business Administration loans. The Obama administration said that it would widen the reach of its home loan modification program, which could help thousands of unemployed and underwater Michigan homeowners. The Home Affordable Modification Program, criticized for its slow pace and low number of modifications, would put $14 billion toward the program by helping those who owe more on their homes than they're worth get new loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration. Unemployed people would get a temporary break, with lowered mortgage payments for three to six months. More

Small businesses not leveraging social media

A new study estimates that only 16 percent of small businesses in the United States are using social media sites to promote themselves. The poll was commissioned by Employers, a Reno, Nev.-based provider of workers' compensation and small business insurance. While 52 percent of the 500 small businesses surveyed believe having a social media presence is important for companies, few are acting on it. More
