Storing Energy as Ice?
The New York Times    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Southern California Public Power Authority—a coalition of several public power agencies—and a seven-year-old Colorado company called Ice Energy have signed a contract to deploy rooftop units that use electricity at night, when demand is low, to make ice. The ice is then used to cool buildings during the day. The system effectively stores electricity made the night before, when generators are sitting idle, and then uses it to reduce electricity demand on hot afternoons, when the generating system is maxed out. For Architects This Decade, Building Efficiency will Replace Grandiosity
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On Jan. 4, the new decade's first day of business, grand openings of two extraordinary real estate projects were widely reported: the US$8.5 billion, 18.5 million square-foot City Center complex in Las Vegas; and the US$1.5 billion Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the world's tallest skyscraper, standing more than a half-mile high on the East Coast of the Arabian peninsula. Media commentators noted that both celebrations seemed like punctuation marks signaling the end of a decade of real estate investment excess and architectural extravagance. You don't have to be a fortune teller to predict that huge, costly luxury projects such as City Center and the Burj Khalifa (formerly the Burj Dubai) will be emulated infrequently during the second decade of the 21st century. The City of the Future Echoes the Past
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beijing burnished its international reputation with a handful of acclaimed icons built for the Olympics. But Shanghai is still the Chinese city that appeals most to foreigners, thanks to its checkered past, colonial architecture and mercantile drive—qualities that don't need translating for most Westerners. Workplace Blame is Contagious and Detrimental
LiveScience via Fox News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Blaming mistakes on others is socially contagious, according to a new study. Just watching someone pawn their failures off on another can make you do the same to protect your self image. The result can be detrimental to everyone involved, particularly in the workplace, researchers say. More

Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Three of the five tallest buildings completed in 2009 were not in the high-rise capitals of China or Dubai, but in the U.S., the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is reporting. And, the council says, Chicago was home to more buildings at least 200 meters (or 656 feet) tall that were completed in 2009 than any other city in the world. More

Seven Steps to Creating a Recycling Program at Work
Earth Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Have you been thinking about ways to encourage recycling in your community? One way is to set up a recycling program at work, if your employer doesn't already have one. Most people have already heard about recycling, although U.S. statistics indicate that only about 32 percent of the population actually do it. But studies also show that people are willing to recycle once they see how important it is. More

Why Diversity Can Backfire on Company Boards
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to corporate boards and diversity, the conventional wisdom is simple: diversity is good. When directors are too alike, the thinking goes, they look at problems—and solutions—the same way. There's no one to challenge prevailing ideas, or to speak out on issues important to certain groups of customers and employees. By contrast, diversity leads to more innovation, more outside-the-box thinking and better governance. Sounds great. And it is, in theory. Unfortunately, few boards that pursue diversity ever see the wished-for returns. Many report no significant change in their performance, while others bog down in conflict and gridlock. Why the gap between potential and reality? Why does it appear to be a lot easier to appoint a diverse board than to make it function well? More
