U.S. Solar Market to Double in the Next Year
Technology Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a few years, the United States is likely to be the world's largest market for solar power, eclipsing Germany, which has taken the lead as a result of strong government incentives in spite of the relative paucity of sunlight in that country. A number of factors could make growth possible in the United States—especially changes in legislation that give utilities incentives to create large solar farms. More

USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The line between work and home is disappearing, says former Financial Times columnist Richard Donkin in his new book. "We don't stop living when we go to work and, very often today, we don't stop working when we arrive home." Technology has merged our working and personal lives, creating a more unified experience described in The Future of Work. More

UBC Develops North America's Greenest Building
UBC Public Affairs    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"Sustainability is about what kind of world we want to live in," says University of British Columbia's John Robinson. If so, then the ambitious project he's leading—the development of the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability—should provide some valuable inspiration. The US$37 million building will be greenhouse gas-positive and a net energy producer, meaning that it will help UBC reduce the energy it uses and carbon it emits. All water will be sourced from rainwater, with wastewater treatment occurring on-site. There is also more carbon sequestered in the building’s wooden structure than will be emitted during its construction and eventual dismantling. More

Five Ways to Start a Kindness Revolution at Work
Reliable Plant    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's that time of year again—when hearts become the decoration of choice and there seems to be pink and red everywhere you turn. The time of year when heart-shaped candy abounds, and we are all encouraged to show some love to those we love—our spouse, significant other, secret crush, family members, co-workers, etc. Wait. Even our coworkers? Yes, says Liz Jazwiec. She points out that the one group we often neglect to show much love to could use a dose in these hard times, and Valentine's Day provides the perfect opportunity to spread some kindness around the workplace. Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sydney's ugliest building may soon be getting a new lease on life through a plan to 'reskin' the entire tower with a high-performance photovoltaic skin. Architecture firm Laboratory for Visionary Architecture has proposed the retrofit, and if their plan is enacted, it would turn the 1960s brutalist building into a brilliant super efficient eco tower. Which of These Six Leadership Styles Works Best?
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Leadership is a big, vague, amorphous topic. We can write about great leaders at great length. But practically speaking, how do you become one? A good start is to focus on leadership styles. Daniel Goleman, who popularized the notion of emotional intelligence, has described the following six different styles that leaders use to motivate others. You don't need to adopt one and ignore the others. Rather, the best leaders move among these styles, using the one that meets the needs of the moment. Think of them all as part of your management repertoire. More

The Hubris of Skyscrapers
The Atlantic Wire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sometimes cities build really tall buildings because they want to house a lot of people, sometimes because they want to increase the city's profile, and sometimes just because it makes more sense than constructing a bunch of smaller buildings. But could there be a hidden, psychological factor driving the construction of skyscrapers? Say, hubris? Magazine writers certainly think so. More

White Roofs May Successfully Cool Cities
Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Painting roofs white has the potential to significantly cool cities and mitigate some impacts of global warming, a new study indicates. The new NCAR-led research suggests there may be merit to an idea advanced by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu that white roofs can be an important tool to help society adjust to climate change. The study team, led by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, cautions that there are still many hurdles between the concept and actual use of white roofs to counteract rising temperatures.
