Why Flexible Hours and Telecommuting are on the Rise
BusinessWest Share
In 2003, about 4.4 million Americans were telecommuting to some extent instead of showing up at the office. In 2010, that number is expected to surpass 100 million. At the same time, the trend toward allowing employees to work flexible or non-traditional hours
has also risen sharply in recent years. Why the surges? As it turns out, even during a recession, companies still value their best talent and are increasingly willing to let them craft a workday around their personal and professional needs. Employers say they benefit because happy workers are productive workers. More

Canada's Buildings Playing Catch-up in Eco-friendliness
Globe & Mail

Buildings don't come any greener than a new research center being built at the University of British Columbia, which relies on the wind, the sun and the ground to provide it with all of its energy needs. When it opens in 2011, the US$37-million Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability will actually reduce the amount of energy used by the university as a whole, as it produces more power than it will consume. It is billed
as the most environmentally friendly building under construction in North America, though UBC Vancouver Sustainability Executive Director John Robinson concedes that new projects will likely to vie for the title before its doors open.

Concept Solution to Rising Seas: Floating Undersea Skyscraper
RT
Share

A Canadian architectural
firm has presented its solution to the apocalyptic scenario in which global warming causes a drastic rise in sea level. The Gyre project is a giant floating self-sustained habitat. Propeller, the central structure of the Gyre, is a vortex of concentric rings ranging in size from 30,000 square meters to just 600 square meters. The upper floors house public places like restaurants, gardens and shops, while lower sections are used for offices and living quarters. The hollow inner part of the vortex
is used for harvesting rain water and for solar energy generation.
