No More Power Lines?
The Christian Science Monitor    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Abundant solar and wind power lies across America’s vast plains and deserts, but getting that distant renewable energy to cities without wrecking vistas and raising lawsuits over transmission lines is a sizable hurdle for green-leaning utility companies. Thousands of miles of towering electrical lines will be needed before big alternative energy projects can take hold. Yet such power lines portend years of legal snarls over the not-in-my-backyard problem. Into this fray comes Phil Harris and his pioneering plan to use underground superconducting cables that will be both hidden from view and more efficient than traditional lines. Harris wants to build a virtually invisible network that would create a national renewable energy hub located in the Southwest. More

Waste Could Generate Up to 7 Percent of Electricity in Spain
Science Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers from the University of Zaragoza have calculated the energy and economic potential of urban solid waste, sludge from water treatment plants and livestock slurry for generating electricity in Spain. These residues are alternative sources of renewable energy, which are more environmentally friendly and, in the case of solid urban waste, more cost effective. More

Obama Sets Aside US$3.4 Billion Stimulus to Jump Start "Power Grid 2.0" in U.S.
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. power grid system has been largely left alone for half a century. We're using inefficient grid technology to try to thread power across the country and in the process are losing precious energy and a lot of cash. As part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act Obama set aside US$3.4 billion to invest in smart grid technology in 2010 and beyond. That block of funding was matched by industry money and private investment to total more than US$8 billion in funding for everything from installation of smart meters to funding for manufacturing processes. The Building Bubble in China
BusinessWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Jack Rodman has cashed in on property busts from Los Angeles to Tokyo, buying and selling soured loans and counseling other investors. Now he's convinced the Beijing real estate market is about to tumble. Rodman figures about half of the city's commercial space is vacant, and to prove it he keeps a slideshow of 55 empty office buildings in the Chinese capital on his computer. There are an additional dozen he says, that he hasn't had time to photograph. "I took these pictures to try to impress upon people the massive amount of oversupply," says Rodman, president of Global Distressed Solutions, which advises investors on Chinese property. More

Workplace Contests Inspire Dieting Employees
Sun Sentinel    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In Delray Beach, Fla., 120 hospital employees are eyeballing each other's weight losses, with hopes of a weekend getaway. All across Palm Beach County, firefighters are competing against the Sheriff's Office, trying to move that scale needle to the left. Even two managers in the poker industry are posting weight-loss goals on their Facebook pages. Diets that once were secret are now celebrated, and the previously private matter of an individual trying to shed a few pounds has become the business of every coworker. Try showing up at your office with a dozen doughnuts anymore, especially this time of the year. Office weight-loss competitions often create an urgency. More

A New Fort, er, Embassy, for London
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. State Department's recent announcement that it had selected a design by the Philadelphia firm KieranTimberlake for its new embassy in London was not exactly uplifting news. The proposed building—a bland glass cube clad in an overly elaborate, quiltlike scrim—is not inelegant by the standards of other recent American embassies, but it has all the glamor of a corporate office block. It makes you wonder if the architects had somehow mistaken the critic Reyner Banham's famous dismissal of the embassy’s 1960 predecessor on Grosvenor Square—"monumental in bulk, frilly in detail"—as something to strive for. Workplace Friendships: Good for Morale, Bad for Productivity
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to a recent survey, a happy office is dependent on a workforce's friendships within the workplace. With only 45 percent of Americans satisfied in their jobs, over half of the people polled said that having pals between the cubicles means better teamwork, communication and morale. On the subject of productivity, however, less than a third of the respondents thought that it increased productivity and performance. More
