Jan. 29, 2010 issue: The Southern California Public Power Authority—a coalition of several public power agencies—and a seven-year-old Colorado company called Ice Energy have signed a contract to deploy rooftop units that use electricity at night, when demand is low, to make ice. The ice is then used to cool buildings during the day. The system effectively stores electricity made the night before, when generators are sitting idle, and then uses it to reduce electricity demand on hot afternoons, when the generating system is maxed out. Sept. 17, 2010 issue: Redevelopment of Lower Manhattan's World Trade Center site has been beset with problems: design changes, funding problems and political squabbling. And there wasn't even much to see at the site for nearly a decade, save for the tops of cranes and a few rumbling trucks, as a tall fence wrapped the perimeter. But nine years after the Sept. 11, attacks, there finally are tangible signs of progress. A memorial and a tree-filled plaza will be completed next year, in time for the 10th anniversary. July 30, 2010 issue: Brazilian practice Königsberger Vannucchi Architects has entered the record books with the world's biggest augmented reality marker for its latest skyscraper. The Fibrasa Connection project allows customers and potential buyers for the office development in Vitória—the capital of the southern Brazilian state Espírito Santo—to see the building before construction work has even begun. In an elaborate set-up, notebook computer displays have been fitted to a helicopter which flies over the site with an augmented reality reader attached. The giant square black-and-white marker on the ground then triggers a display of a full-size 3-D model of the 32,000-square-meter development on the screens. More
