IMA Michigan Council Celebrates 10th Anniversary of its Annual Fall Conference

The IMA® Michigan Council recently hosted its Annual Fall Conference, marking the 10th anniversary of this well-attended, highly respected event. The all-day conference, titled “Excellence and Professionalism in Management Accounting,” attracted nearly 200 IMA members, students, and non-members from Michigan and parts of Indiana, Ohio, and Ontario. Held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Michigan State University, the conference offered attendees eight hours of CPE credit, including two hours in ethics for certified professionals.

The Michigan Council’s conference was patterned after the Ohio Council’s very successful and long-running two-day conference at Kent State University. In addition to sessions on leading-edge management accounting topics, the conference provides a forum to recognize chapter performance, certification, and individual achievement. This is done during an awards luncheon, which always features a keynote speaker from IMA Global. This year’s speaker was John C. Macaulay, CMA®, IMA Chair-Elect, who spoke on the topic of leadership.

“It was a privilege to participate in the Michigan Council’s Annual Fall Conference, which enjoys a distinguished history of providing valuable CPE and networking opportunities to management accounting professionals in the Midwest region,” said Mr. Macaulay. “The success of this conference clearly points to the important role served by IMA’s network of chapters and councils.”

Among the local volunteer leaders in attendance were (left to right) Dana Collins, CPA, Michigan Council president; and Susan E. Bos, CMA, CPA, Ann Arbor Chapter scholarship director.

Mr. Macaulay continued, “Currently, IMA supports nearly 200 chapters globally and approximately two dozen councils in the U.S., and we are continuing our efforts to expand this network. These chapters and councils provide valuable services that simply cannot be provided by IMA Global, including regional conferences like this which offer members a cost-effective way to gain CPE credit. They also provide an excellent, low-risk way for members to acquire or improve their leadership skills, an important asset in today’s competitive job market.”

The first Michigan Council Annual Fall Conference was held on October 30, 2002. During its early years, the conference was co-sponsored by the Michigan Council and the Lansing-Jackson Chapter. Jim Horsch, CMA, CFM, was the driving force behind the conference for the first eight years, and hosted or co-hosted each conference until 2010. Mr. Horsch is a former IMA national vice president, Michigan Council president, and has held other IMA volunteer leadership positions at the national, regional, and local levels. For the past two years, the conference has been chaired by Chuck Phillips, CMA, the 2010-2011 Michigan Council president.

Since 2005, the Michigan Council has co-sponsored the event with Robert Half International, and shared one-third of the net proceeds of the conference with its chapters, based on attendance by chapter members. Cleary University has also been a valued sponsor of the conference for the past five years.
