Even though membership is their core business model, not as many associations have membership staff as you might expect. Here’s a look at some of the varying ways associations do, or don’t, build membership into their staff structures.

Great collaboration impacts how you provide relevance and value to your members. It is easy to say, "Our board is going to be collaborative and work better together this year." The hard part is defining what it is, what it looks like and how it's done. There is no magic in making this happen, but there is a lot of good work to build a collaborative mindset that is magical. Building the mindset in turn builds a great team, and a great team innovates through great collaboration. How do we get there?
The Demand Network
Engagement is not about you but the value members perceive they get. It is not a matter of finding the right message or crafting the perfect wording. It is about identifying what truly matters to members; how it is experienced and what obstacles stand in the way. So, the way to engage is by uncovering member’s innermost thoughts & unarticulated needs and crafting solutions to problems that matter.
The Pareto Principal. You may not know exactly what it is, but you experience it all the time. Better known as the 80/20 rule, the Pareto Principal suggests that 20 percent of your members probably do 80 percent of the work. So how do you lighten the burden for the overextended 20% and at the same time create meaningful involvement for others? Consider using technology, existing technology in some cases and new technology in others, to engage and entice “the other 80 percent.”
The world of mobile marketing has been in development for several years now and businesses of all stripes have “gone mobile.” That includes nonprofits, membership associations and organizations. While in 2010 27 percent of Americans had a smartphone, in 2015 that number shot up to 64 percent, making it that much easier to reach out to donors and members through texting. So you’re ready to launch a mobile marketing campaign for your nonprofit. But where do you begin?
For most nonprofits, meetings are the central function of the organization. What nonprofits often don't recognize, however, is that meetings are also a source of significant potential liability in the form of contract penalties, legal claims, and commitments that may go unfulfilled due to causes beyond the organization's control.
