By Catherine Iste
As a consultant and board member, I have experienced board presentations from both sides of the table. During a recent round of first-quarter presentations, I was asked by a board to listen to the nonemployee presenters and produce guidelines for future presentations. Based on my summary back to the board, here are there top four priorities for service provider presenters.

Is your association providing education?
Is education in your organization’s mission statement? If not specifically mentioned, it’s probably in your strategic plan. Isn’t it? If it’s in your organization’s top five goals, do you at least allocate 20 percent of your budget to education? If education is in your mission, is your education budget in line with your mission? Are your education staff and programs aligned with your mission or strategic plan? Sharing information is not education. That’s just passing along reports and stats. Authentic education leads to learning. Learning requires thinking. Learning requires actively doing something…not just reading or listening.
3 myths about millennial members get busted
Forget the studies you’ve read about the mindset of millennials. If you really want to know what we’re thinking about and what we look for in an association, just ask — and, please, don’t clump us all together.
Tips for improving trade show participation in 2015
The association should be like a tactician competing on the battlefield – vying for new members and the continuing loyalty of old ones. Lee Ali, managing director and founder of Expo Stars Interactive Ltd., states that 65 percent of exhibitors do not have a clear strategy or plan of action for trade show participation. Given these events are often costly, it is important to put time into thinking through trade show involvement and determining a worthwhile ROI.
Organizational change happening? Don't forget your bylaws
By William D. Pawlucy
Bylaws are a set of rules that provide the framework for your organization, but they are sometimes overlooked when organizational change happens. Imagine an event that happens frequently that is a change to the membership structure of your association. After a strategic discussion, your board decides to add a new membership category that currently does not exist. It's not as easy as a board vote and will require an amendment to your current bylaws. As the association's executive director, you should be armed to discuss the process with your board.
Are you an inside-out or outside-in organization?
The Demand Perspective
Are you the kind of organization that is so attuned to your customers that you can think from their perspective? Unless your culture and organizational focus are outside-in — starting with the customer and organizing every aspect of the business around him — no investment or effort at resonating with what matters to your customer will make any difference.
