As 2009 comes to a close, ISEE would like to wish its members, partners, and other industry professionals a safe and happy holiday season. Imperial smokestack could come down with a boom

The next attempt to demolish the Imperial Tobacco Co. smokestack will be a dynamite event, according to the demolition foreman who’s been struggling to bring it down in recent weeks. Friday, the historic 200-foot smokestack, which has defied previous attempts to pull it down with cables, will be imploded by a professional blasting crew, said Jimmy Davis of Biggs Brothers Construction.   More

Ohio explosives plant blast turns fatal

A woman has died more than a month after being injured in a blast that ripped through an explosives plant in southeast Ohio. Forty-three-year-old Marletta Betts died of complications from burns at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, according to Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak.  More

Report tells the story behind N.C. fireworks explosion

The lone survivor of the July Fourth fireworks explosion that killed four people on Ocracoke Island, N.C., has told investigators that the crew pushed electric igniters into the fireworks while inside the truck and they exploded. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released its report in response to The Virginian-Pilot's request for information.

WorkSafe Victoria says Impact Drilling has been convicted and fined $80,000 after it detonated explosives close to a vehicle and worker. WorkSafe Victoria says its investigation of the May 2007 incident at the Mernda Village housing estate in Melbourne, Australia, identified a 'litany' of safety failings which could have caused a fatality.  More
