There was plenty to write about from a style standpoint at High Point's Premarket. Probably the biggest continuing development in wood is that we're out of the espresso era. There are still dark finishes, but it's more like dull blacks or lighter coffee-bean browns.

So, another market week is over and the home textiles industry is feeling pretty good about things, dare we say even a bit smug. Sure, business is still tough and margins remain as squeezed as an overused, near-dead tube of Crest. But the cotton crisis seems to have subsided, or at least it's stepped down from Defcom 5 levels and most companies have figured out how to bob and weave when it comes to bobbing and weaving.

Harry Potter's invisibility cloak may be fiction, but it could be a reality in the not-too-distant future. That may be a matter of physics, but perhaps a smart textile will help it along. Who would have thought a decade ago that fabrics could be made to congeal a bleeding wound, monitor and transmit bioactivity, become a personal area network, administer medications or create their own heat?

A strong start and a steady flow of traffic marked much of the Los Angeles International Textile Show, held
Oct. 10–12 at the California Market Center. Although the show draws many well-known Los Angeles designers and brands, many exhibitors reported seeing several out-of-town buyers.

"The U.S. currently has export commitments of 8.0 million statistical bales, of which only about 1.0 million bales have so far been exported. This means that there is still a lot of cotton to come out
of the U.S., sold or unsold. US merchants are currently trying to figure out their quality position, because the U.S. crop presents a very mixed bag of good, bad and ugly cotton against commitments of mostly premium grades."

Vietnam's garment and textile industry will face a downturn in contracts next year due to the poor economic conditions in the U.S. and Europe, despite monthly export revenue of more than $1 billion, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Ministry statistics showed the sector would reach its export
turnover target of $13 billion-13.5 billion this year.

IICRC changing name to The Clean Trust

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification has changed its name to The Clean Trust. The change was announced at the fall 2011 Meeting & Instructors Symposium. Along with the new name, a new, updated, branding campaign will be rolled out in the coming year, the institute said.
