ITS America applauds FREIGHT Act's focus on innovative technology solutions ITS America Share     ITS America President and CEO Scott Belcher participated in a media teleconference with several other transportation leaders to support provisions of a new freight bill introduced by U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash. The FREIGHT Act of 2010 would establish a national freight policy to ensure the nation's transportation system supports the United States' global economic competitiveness. Goals of the legislation include reducing congestion and delays of goods and commodities, increasing travel time reliability on major freight corridors, and making freight transportation more efficient and better for the environment. Among other solutions, the FREIGHT Act would encourage investment in intelligent transportation systems to reduce congestion and improve safety. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that the second National Distracted Driving Summit will be held on Sept. 21, in Washington, D.C. The Transportation Safety Advancement Group is holding a Case Study Workshop & Webinar in conjunction with the National Rural ITS Annual Conference in Huntington, W.Va., Aug. 1-4. The workshop is set for Tuesday Aug. 3, 1-4 p.m. and features a technology focused study of the November 2009 Army Base shooting incident that took place in Fort Hood, Texas. The workshop, led by Jim Reed of Central Texas Council of Governments, discusses the incident from an emergency responder perspective and will discuss technology based successes, failures and lessons learned.
