HOT lanes, the acronym for High Occupancy Toll lanes, appear to be a "hot" issue in Marin County, Calif. Here's how the HOT lanes work--they allow single occupant vehicles to pay for the privilege of driving in express, carpool or HOV lanes. They also work on principles of supply and demand, called congestion pricing. If the traffic is more intense, the toll increases; and if there is less traffic, it goes down. Tolls are monitored through transponders like FasTrak. More
