Take back the streets
Forbes Asia Magazine Share
Creating headline-grabbing instaparks in the middle of America's most frenetic, congested city is business as usual for Janette Sadik-Khan, 49, a bureaucrat who behaves like anything but. The New York City transportation commissionership, which she assumed in April 2007, has historically been the preserve of beleaguered officials saddled with duties like filling potholes and erasing graffiti. The commissioner manages streets, sidewalks, nontoll bridges and tunnels plus the Staten Island Ferry but not the city's $6.1 billion mass transit operation. Sadik-Khan has attacked her job with the energy of a speeding bullet train. More
Massachusetts offers real-time data on I-93 traffic
The Eagle Tribune    Share
Radar beams and cameras are confirming what many travelers on Interstate 93 already know — moving from three lanes to two can mean a nightmare of a wait. Anyone heading north from Salem between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on a Friday or south from Manchester on a Sunday afternoon knows that all too well. Delays routinely mean motorists may take three to four times the normal travel time to get through those congested areas during peak travel times, according to recent corridor studies. More

The National Day parade in Beijing, drew an audience of more than 200,000 people and nearly 200,000 participants, who all needed to be dispersed within three and a half hours after the ceremony. The event posed an unprecedented challenge to the city's traffic control system. But a newly adopted intelligent transportation system (ITS), which uses information and communications technologies to manage infrastructure and vehicles, helped the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau complete its daunting mission. Improving transportation - above ground
Gotham Gazette    Share
The most comprehensive analysis of Michael Bloomberg's New York mayoral administration's transportation record is, like so many other comprehensive analyses offered by the administration, an internally authored document. Released in December, the Department of Transportation's Sustainable Streets Index tracks transportation trends over the past decade. It's a well-designed, fact-packed, reader-friendly report that unsurprisingly depicts the agency that authored it quite favorably. More
Should speeders pay more on the Kansas Turnpike?
The Kansas City Star    Share
If you drive the speedlimit, you'd pay the standard fare. If you speed, you'd pay more. How would the Turnpike know? Your time would start when you picked up a farecard at the tollway entrance; when you exit you'd pay based on how long it took you to do the trip. More
