'Diverging diamond' traffic flow: Way of the future?

It's not often that you can make traffic flow more smoothly and safely without spending significant time and money. But drivers in Springfield, Mo., are the first in the United States to use a new interchange design that transportation officials say is quick, cheap, and safe. The "diverging diamond" is being put to the test. Fans of the new highway interchange design say it improves traffic flow by eliminating problematic left turns. There's just one catch: It briefly sends all cars over to the left side of the road.

Chicago-area toll roads sell $280 million Build America Bonds

The Illinois Tollway, seeking to ease congestion on toll roads around the third most-populous U.S. metropolitan area, sold $280 million of 5.85 percent taxable Build America Bonds due in 2034. States and municipalities have raised $55 billion for public works by selling Build America Bonds data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Rail administration says rail freight more efficient than trucks

GE, Chinese partners sign agreements to advance clean technologies

General Electric Co and its Chinese partners announced the signing of a series of "Country to Company" agreements aimed at promoting collaboration between GE and Chinese public and private sector aviation, energy and transportation organizations. In a separate release, GE and China's Ministry of Railways announced that they signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly advance high-speed rail opportunities in the United States. This collaboration will allow GE Transportation to be the first U.S. locomotive manufacturer to more effectively compete for high-speed rail projects against global competitors.

Community transit debuts 'swift' line

When Community Transit's new Swift Bus Rapid Transit service debuts, it will be the first Bus Rapid Transit line in Washington state and at 17 miles, one of the longest in the country. During weekdays, Swift buses will run every 10 minutes from 12 stations, along the State Route 99 corridor, each one to two miles apart.

Officials seeking study of charging vehicles for trips

Last month, regional transportation officials submitted a proposal for a federal grant to study whether Washington state should serve as the first major test of congestion road pricing. Currently drivers pay taxes at the pump: The more gas bought, the more they pay. But the revenue brought in by those gas taxes is slipping as vehicles become more fuel efficient.
