Teens ignore laws against texting while driving

With momentum building in Washington, D.C., for all 50 U.S. states to outlaw text messaging behind the wheel, there is evidence that the key demographic targeted by such legislation, teen drivers, will not pay much attention. At least one major study has found that, with mobile devices now central to their lives, young people often ignore laws against using cell phones or texting in the car.

Testing smart roads to streamline the commute

The city streets and freeways of the future will be able to tell commuters ahead of time whether they're about to hit a back-up, and adjust speed limits for optimum traffic flow. That future is already here in Alameda County, Calif., where traffic lights know to stay green when buses and emergency vehicles are coming. Soon a 20-mile corridor on Interstate 80 will experiment with a variable speed limit determined by the road sensors that already calculate driving times.

New research center proposed

Southern Nevada could be home to a new high-speed rail research center under a new proposal. One project connecting Las Vegas to Southern California with a high-speed rail line is expected to begin construction next year. The DesertXpress project, estimated to cost $4 billion, would use traditional high-speed trains traveling at about 150 mph.

Automatic tolling a non-starter

The ambitious plan to install high-tech automatic toll collection systems on the highways to check massive revenue leakage has been delayed as the private developers are not keen to import these machines. The three pilot projects for the electronic toll collection system, sources said, could not take off as scheduled in October, and had been deferred by about six months.

Jeffrey N. Buxbaum, who leads the tolling and road pricing practice at Cambridge Systematics, was in Portland, Ore., to discuss the future of congestion pricing there. In town to make presentations to government officials about how Oregon can test a congestion pricing pilot program on Portland-area highways, Buxbaum was obviously dealing with a hot-button issue.
