Carnegie Mellon University's 'smart parking' moves ahead

Drivers circle city streets daily in some neighborhoods, searching for signs a parking spot will open up — a car starting up, a garage without its "full" sign turned on or someone with arms full of packages walking with purpose toward a row of cars. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University hope to put an end to such hunts. They're developing what they call "smart parking" technology, slated for trials in spring in San Francisco, which would determine which spaces are open and tell drivers via cell phones, Web sites or electronic message boards where to go.

Serbian Minister of Infrastructure Milutin Mrkonjic attended today, at the Bubanj potok toll gate the opening of the electronic toll collection (ETC) system for the Belgrade-Nis highway. The public road company "Putevi Srbije" put this system into operation at the 10 main toll gates at the Belgrade-Nis highway.

Japanese shipping lines continue to develop new technologies for cleaner freight

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have announced the development of a carbon-dioxide-reducing, efficiency-boosting fuel additive for merchant ships, which they have created in conjunction with Japan's largest fuel additive manufacturer, Taihokohzai. MOL plan to use the new additive, called TAICRUSH HD, on its operated vessels to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

Metrolink awaits arrival of cars featuring crash-resistant technology

As part of a multi-pronged effort to transform Metrolink from one of the nation's most dangerous rail systems to one of its safest, officials said the agency will soon receive the first delivery of new cab cars designed to better withstand crashes. Metrolink Board Chair Keith Millhouse said the five-county commuter rail agency is expecting the arrival of a cab and passenger car featuring special crash-resistant technologies next month.
