ITS America Smart Solution Spotlight: INRIXTraffic.us, a free Web service with real-time traffic flow across city and state boundaries
ITS America    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
INRIX, a Kirkland, Wash.-based traffic information provider, was featured in this week's ITS America Smart Solution Spotlight for its release of INRIXTraffic.us — the first free Web service to provide state, regional and municipal agencies with a complete view of accurate real-time traffic flow on all major highways, interstates, arterials and secondary roads in major cities, rural areas and across state lines. The free service provides a real-time picture of current traffic speeds for more than 160,000 miles of roads nationwide, growing to over 260,000 by the end of the year. "Real-time traffic information is vital for keeping people and goods moving on our transportation system," said Scott Belcher, President of ITS America. "Yet municipal and state boundaries and tight budgets have often made that challenging. By sharing the latest technological innovations at no cost, INRIX is providing local and state agencies with a key tool to manage congestion and improve traffic operations." ITS Japan    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On May 11, IT Strategic Headquarters met to decide the "new IT Strategy," which describes the short-term targets up to FY2013 and long-term targets up to FY2020.

The new IT Strategy formulated under the administration of the Democratic Party of Japan consists of three main points; 1) "realization of E-Government service," 2) "re-bonding local communities" and 3) "creation of new market and international expanding." ITS is encouraged in the second point by introducing and deploying the safety driving support systems to revitalize local communities. It is also addressed in the third point by decreasing traffic congestion on main roads by 50 percent in Japan by FY2020 compared to those of FY2010 through ITS technologies. The ITS Strategic Headquarters is planning to prepare a road map with a specific work schedule for implementation.

Is it time to raise the gas tax?
Time    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Back in 2008, when Barack Obama was running for President, he took a politically unpopular stand on the gas tax. Both John McCain and Hillary Clinton, U.S. presidential hopefuls at that time, were calling for a gas-tax "holiday" to stimulate the economy. Obama took the side of most economists in saying that a lower gas tax might play well at the polls but wasn't actually smart economic policy. More

Like hundreds of other communities, Ohio's Lorain County, a blue-collar area west of Cleveland, used federal economic stimulus funds to buy equipment — 13 buses for $713,000. There was just one problem: The county ran out of money to actually run the buses, and nearly shut down service before a last-minute intervention left it with just two routes. More

You probably have a friend like Campbell Scott. Or, rather, the character Campbell Scott played in the 1992 film Singles. You remember: the idealistic transportation planner flummoxed by all the congestion generated by single people driving alone. "If you had a supertrain," he tells a friend, "you give people a reason to get out of their cars. Coffee, great music ... they will park and ride. I know they will." More
